I am of the belief that talent wins. Ohio State is by far the most talented team in the country. They are probably going to end up winning a NC next week. Ryan Day will get over the hump against ND. Reality is his team helps him overcome his short comings as a coach. He is not a great coach. He is a guy that just happens to have more talent then everyone else. Saban was a great coach...Watching the last two nights though I do think both Sark and Franklin showed their asses.
Last night Penn State ran all over ND. They controlled the game with their power run game. Why with 40 seconds left do you put the ball in the hands of a QB that has struggled all night long. You just ran the ball and picked up 12-15 yards. Next play all you have to do is run a screen. You don't need to score in regulation. You have the healther team. You have the five best players on your side....TAKE THE GAME TO OVERTIME. What does Franklin and his OC do - Have their QB run a play where he comes off his first two options and throws across the middle of the field getting pressured and gives up a pick. Many want to blame Drew Allar. He is 20 years old....There are not many Jameis Winston types who pressure at that age does not exist. You as a coach need to protect your young player and get the game at worst to overtime and win it with a great OL, a great TE, a great defense and a great run game...Why....
That leads me to tonight...Texas basically controlled the game once Treyvon Henderson got the penalty and Ohio State was not the same. You score before half and have ALL THE MOMETUM. Ohio State comes out and you blitz a safety and they run a screen and give up a 75 yard touchdown. WHY....Are these coaches that damn stupid. Not to be outdone you are down 21-14. You get back to back PI to put you on the one. You have Arch Manning who all year runs the ball for you. WHY....WHY....WHY are you not running four straight plays between the tackles and score from the one. Ohio State is not stopping you four straight times. No, instead you run a play to the outside and lose 6-7 yards.
Sark and Franklin while both can recruit at an elite level. They both are going to make the playoffs multiple times over the next ten years. BUT WHY....do they continue to out think themselves in these situations. I feel for Ewers because while he is not the elite QB that everyone says he was - this game was lost on coaching and that is tough for me to say. Last night as well.
You can say what you want about Jimbo or even MN for that matter. When they played in BIG GAMES -Clemson vs. FSU (2013). the Auburn game final drive NC....Norvell against LSU. These guys are in cotrol, have the confidence to make the right plays and don't do something so damn stupid it cost you the game. The drive against AU, I don't know if Sark or Franklin can make those calls. I feel for Allar to because here is a kid who was no doubt off last night and the coach had the run game clicking and forced something from the QB which should never have happened.
Listen Sark will most likely end up winning a NC the next two years. He has Arch Manning who I think will be the best or one of the best QB's in college football next year. Texas really missed Baxter this year and he will be back. Texas will most likely be the odds on favorite. That being said Franklin and Sark seem to shrink in these big games...
On to Ohio State vs. ND - Listen ND should never have made it this far. What will be interesting is Freeman and Golden are elite coaches. They are going to do much of what Texas did to keep Jeremiah Smith in check. The NC game is going to come down to the first half....If Ohio State is going to win and win big they will do it in the first half. If ND can do what Texas did and keep the game close, I feel Freeman will do what Michigan did and win the game. I have enjoyed the playoffs but man did Texas and Penn State both miss huge opportunities.
