Opinions on home security systems

Vivint alarm, cameras, all impact windows, 90 lb doberman, and 2 husband and wife law enforcement officers = no attempted break ins so far.

Former homicide investigator here and this is my opinion; no security system is fool proof. That being said, it’s a start. It’s a good feeling coming home and knowing nobody is in your house or is attempting to get in. Mine has an app that sends notifications when system is armed, disarmed or activated. It can identify who is setting it or disarming it by their particular code. It has a geofence aspect to it that will send me an alert if I go a certain distance without setting it. Windows and doors are a must, I even have a sensor on my attic door. I also have a camera system, motion and audio activated. It also sends alerts if it detects movement or sound. I have it set to record upon receiving those actions. I can view all cameras live as well. I do recommend not hooking an alarm system to your home phone. Use a cellular device with a battery back up for both the unit and cell. Further, if you can, get a dog. Crooks dislike the attention a dog brings. Even the little ankle biting yappers. Mine is 108lbs and his bark sounds bigger. Lastly, exercise your 2nd Ammendment right and get a firearm. If you aren’t trained, get trained. Never pull your weapon to use it as a threat. If you pull it out and aim it at someone, be sure to double tap. There is no time for a dissertation. Without witnesses, it is up to you to articulate the threat you felt you were under. Dead men tell no tales and some low life wheeling into a civil court with a colostomy bag ain’t a pretty picture.

we have safe touch, landscape lights, wired cameras, ring doorbell and a pit mix. she's 57 pounds of muscle and teeth and doesn't like strangers.

It's not necessarily about [perfectly] keeping people out, [as someone above said, that's not possible] just making it more difficult. Kind of a "outrun the other campers not the bear" scenario.

ADT alarm System. Then when I hear the siren a .22, 9mm, .45, 12 Gauge, AR-10, and soon to be a AR-15 Pistol or AK47 Pistol or FN 5-7. If that doesn’t do the trick I guess I will give the cops a ring. Been thinking about a Red Doberman, but I am not interested in taking care of a dog.

No alarm system. No cameras. Cheap ass windows that the contractor put in when house was built 30 years ago. No law enforcement experience. No break ins so far, in 30 years living in the house.
The last dozen+ there's been a big, loud, territorial Australian Cattle Dog who has the freedom to go in & out of the house all day; I don't doubt that she's been an effective deterrent - especially since neighbor across the street has been broken into twice, and our doors are more secluded than his.
Then again, it might be the two guard cats that have protected us.

Smith and Wesson. I've never heard any negative feedback about those guys! They don't tend to say much either come to think of it.
