Parents of the LR...how old were your kids when you allowed them to drink with you?

You just need to switch to bourbon.

I’ve gone through a bourbon phase, vodka phase, tequila phase, wine phase, craft beer phase, and even a rum phase.

I’ve tried it all and enjoyed them all.

When I walk the beer aisle or go to order a drink at a restaurant now I struggle with what I want. None of it sounds appealing anymore.

And just an FYI...I’m not an alcoholic or anything crazy like that. I’m just bored with drinking.

My oldest is 16. We don't have a policy yet, but I will let them (assuming no friends present) have a beer or glass of champagne on special Holidays or occasions their Senior year ~18. I imagine the rules will relax a bit as they come back from college. I think 18 should be the legal age, myself. Might as well be....

But we also won't be that one house where parents let there kids and friend come to drink. Everyone had that one friend whose parents were like that...

If you are purchasing beer from a beer aisle at Kroger, you are purchasing the wrong beer.

Also, who goes through a rum phase?

I was ok with my kids having a drink with me from the time were 15 or so, but I have been absolutely not down with allowing anyone else's kids to drink at my house. Being the "cool" parent can land you in jail for a Long time.

I also agree that it should be 18. I am 61 and the drinking age was 18 back then (it changed a few years after I turned 18). We need to stress drinking responsibly and reduce the binge drinking.

Build up that tolerance at a younger age. Do it like they did in "Mad Men"

one might envision a system where one is allowed to drink at 18, but a single public intoxication conviction revokes that status.

That would be clever system. Seems like it would reduce teens cruising around looking for place to hide and drink and driving home potentially as well and be a more realistic age where you could possibly have some willing to wait that long as they come of age at 15-17. Goal setting number 1 rule, set the target as one that can actually be accomplished. Expecting young adults and then adults, for three years, to wait until they are 21 is simply an unrealistic goal. Therefore, it gets ignored.

That's all I drink anymore. An occasional beer every now and again, but mostly rum. I have at least a half dozen different types on the shelf right now and no - none are the captain.

I'm 58 and it was 18 for me too. My brother is two years younger and I think it changed right before he turned 18.

At first, I thought that 13 year old story was crazy. Then I thought a little more about it ...

When watching games with my family, whenever the huskers scored, my dad, uncles, and grandpa would pass around a bottle of peppermint schnapps. I was allowed to take a pull every once in a while. That probably started when I was about that age. I agree, for most kids, that's a bad idea. I was a pretty well-grounded kid, great grades and an athlete, it didn't have any impact other than some bonding with my family. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't ever getting drunk or tipsy at that stage.

Not quite. I'm 54 and it was 18 then too. It was the following year, I believe, when it transitioned to 19, 20 then 21...

I get your point Trip. But, you can buy Tropicala at Kroger here in ATL. They carry other Creature Comfort and Scofflaw beers too. Not like it’s all swill.

Lol - to that point though, maybe Trop has “jumped the shark.”

I grew up in Maryland and the drinking age was 21 long before I ever thought to drink. But in DC, which was only 7 miles away, was 18. That is, until 3 months before my 18th birthday.

I rarely drank in high school, but went nuts at FSU. I’m embarrassed (and very lucky) as I look back on it.

Yeah my parents would have beat my azz up and down our street if I was drinking in HS. Then when I went off to FSU I was getting drunk 3-4 times a week for the first two years of college. Ultimately I would probably let my daughter get drunk with me before she goes off to college for me to see how it affects her.

Scofflaw -eh. Not a fan of their stuff. Monday Night brewing has put out some good stuff recently, Hans Brolo and Dust Bunny, but it's hard to find that stuff at Kroger.

But yeah, Trop is great, but after a year of it, it gets old.

There are several other local breweries doing great stuff, and it changes up the flavor profile from NE IPA Juice bomb of Trop. I love everything that Burial (Asheville) puts out, Hawkbill IPA, Surfwax, Ceremonial IPA. You won't be able to get CC's specialities in Kroger like their Tritonia cucumber lime gose, Cosmik Debris, or Automatic Pale. I think Orpheus does really well with their speciality beers. I'm just saying, the beer aisles at Kroger are relatively tired, and to have a good experience with beer you've got to keep trying new things...

I'm not against letting my boys (twins age 8) try a sip of beer or wine at home when they're teens. I can't honestly say what exact age feels right to me. I guess if they want to try it at 10-11 I would let them just to see. I'm pretty sure I had tasted wine by that time, and I'm sure it would be as gross to them as it was to me at the time. My wife being a Euro is pretty relaxed about these things. She says you could get served at a restaurant at 16 in Germany when she was growing up. Kids drink, but not really the binge drinking culture we have here in high school/college.

My son is a freshman at FSU so his drinking budget allows for knock-off fireball and Bud Light. I'll have a drink with him when he acquires a taste for a good IPA, or at least a hoppy pale ale.

I let my son have a dip of beer, wine and liquor drinks when he was 7-8. He hated the taste of all of them. So he is 12.5 now. Hopefully he will wait until he is older to drink.

Same folks who let their kids rip fireball shots. At least make your kid do a real shot. Fireball is the wooorst!

Kidding. I feel where @DanC78 is at. I've been partying pretty hard, through phases of various types of drinks, for about 20 years now and I'm pretty over it. Don't need the buzz, don't need the hangover. I can party on one beer just fine.

My son is 15 and I allow him an occasional sip of alcohol at home only. One concern I have for him is that he has a gluten sensitivity, which eliminates most beer for him. I'm a bit nervous about his future alcohol consumption in college being focused on liquor drinks.
