PGA Tour and LIV Golf to merge

Hmmm. That didn't take long at all.

Greg and Phil should be taking a victory lap.

So does this mean that the PGA absorbs LIV and the Euro tour and things go back to the way they were before with bigger prize money? If so that was very well played by he actors involved.

I wonder if Monahan survives this. Would be really easy for the tour players to force him out. All the guys who stayed loyal and passed up nine figure guaranteed money and got in front of the press to defend the PGA tour. They may tell Jay to take a walk. Boycott the Fed Ex playoffs and he’s gone within a day. I suspect this is largely due to all the litigation and the anti trust lawsuit forcing their hand.

No. LIV had the bigger purse. Its the other way around id bet.

One of the funniest things these guys all say, especially on the LIV side, is how “this is the best thing for the game of golf”. Which is hilarious. Like because of this the average muni track I play on is going to get an increased budget for groundskeeping and all of us will benefit. When the PGA tour and LIV start building huge golf centers near inner cities that’s when I’ll believe that this is the best thing for the game of golf and not just the best thing for the players pockets. Hopefully at least some of the money will go downhill so guys on the Korn Ferry tour can at least make a decent living.

Money wins! Some people will sell their soul for a dollar. For those, money is more important than doing the right thing. Character, or the lack of it, is for sale.

Can somebody explain this to me in layman's terms. What happened? Why did discrepancy? I think they were at war with each other for a while. Does this end it?

I know there's quite a bit of history which I did not follow.

So there was this golf tour that controlled everything golf related and was very reluctant to change anything. Then a couple of well known golfers teamed up with a group of Saudis with more money than Oprah and formed a new tour. The golf tour whined and cried for a while while they bled players to the new tour. Then they sold out to the new tour. The end. Oh yeah and I think one of the players is still crying about it.

Are you in business with the Saudi’s? I don’t care if you are but you paint this very one sided picture of how it all went down.

Well an article in today’s WSJ recounts the meeting Jay Monahan had in the ginormous lobby of the otherworldly new PGA Tour HQ in Ponte Vedra when he said basically they’d spent $50 million already in legal fees and had to dip into the Reserves to pay for it and they couldn’t out spend an oil giant.
His biggest regret was having to explain to his young daughters why he’s going to be in business with a kingdom who mistreats women.
Nothing apparently about why the Tour made some emotional decisions that weren’t very wise or strategic. But oh boy do they have a nice building and extravagant grounds. 🙄

I doubt he's part of the equation for very long.

Do tell us your "other side". There were two sides and one had more money. That's it. Do you put gas in your car?
Two guys, Norman and Phil, decided to directly go into business with the Saudi’s knowing their horrible human rights record as Phil stated explicitly. They had limited success attracting top players (only 11 top 50 players) despite offering nine figure guarantees. Their tournaments were watched by almost no one and they had no revenue. Players were unable to attain any world golf ranking points which was going to cripple many of them being eligible to play in majors moving forward The PGA tour responded by increasing purses for select events and had seemingly weathered the storm. But now for a variety of reasons decided a long drawn out legal fight with the LIV tour wasn’t worth it and I’m sure the Saudis will be funding the PGA tour with billions of dollars. I think the PGA tour came out of this looking horribly.

Do I put gas in my car? What a silly argument that is. I totally understand why some of the guys left but your framing of this as the PGA tour being whiny and being bullied by the LIV tour is funny. Tell me, if the LIV tour was doing so well why did they even engage the PGA tour in this merger?

Now they have a seat at the table. That's really all it is.

The Saudi Crown Prince is moving the Kingdom into this century to compete with other countries in the area but if he does it too quickly he risks his life and I mean that literally. He just gutted the morality police so that women no longer fear being hit on the street if they aren’t covered up all the way. That’s huge.
He also has approved the sale of alcohol at a private resort. First ever in the dry kingdom.
