Tyrrell Hatton earns first career win at Arnold Palmer

Two-time FedExCup champion – and 2018 winner at Bay Hill – Rory McIlroy leads the star-studded field at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard. Englishman Tyrrell Hatton looks to defend his 2020 title.
FIELD NOTES: Jordan Spieth is set to make his debut at Bay Hill. Spieth is rounding into form of late, having gone T4-T3-T15 in his last three TOUR events… Hatton has won twice on the European Tour in the last five months and has rocketed up to fifth in the world since his Bay Hill victory in 2020… Will Zalatoris continues his epic ride up golf’s ladder and earned a spot in the field thanks to his position in the Official World Golf Ranking… Ryder Cup captains Steve Stricker and Padraig Harrington received Sponsor’s Exemptions to compete, as did Kamaiu Johnson, who is set to play his second-ever TOUR event. Johnson’s inspiring story caught the eye of tournament organizers after he had to withdraw from the Farmers Insurance Open due to a positive COVID-19 test… Three of the current top 10 in this season’s FedExCup will look to move up the standings, including Viktor Hovland, Harris English, and Max Homa… Other notables in the field include Justin Rose, Rickie Fowler, Bryson DeChambeau, and Patrick Reed.
FEDEXCUP: Winner receives 550 FedExCup points.
COURSE: Bay Hill Club & Lodge, par 72, 7,454 yards (yardage subject to change). Originally designed by Dick Wilson and Joe Lee, the course was reimagined by Arnold Palmer, the tournament’s namesake. The Arnold Palmer Invitational has been held at Bay Hill every year on the PGA TOUR since 1979.
STORYLINES: International golfers have won the last five years. The last golfer from the U.S. to don the red cardigan was Matt Every, who won in both 2014 and 2015… The winner of the Arnold Palmer Invitational gets a three-year exemption on TOUR instead of the usual two thanks to its elevated status on the schedule… There are 123 golfers in the field, but three past winners Robert Gamez (1990), Paul Goydos (1996), and Tim Herron (1999) are add-ons and will not be replaced if they withdraw… University of Louisville golfer Matthias Schmid earned a spot in the field after being identified as the golfer “Best Representing the Arnold Palmer Legacy” at the Arnold Palmer Cup in December. Others to receive the same exemption include Collin Morikawa and Maverick McNealy. McNealy is in the field this week as a professional while Morikawa finished T9 in 2020.

72-HOLE RECORD: 264, Payne Stewart (1987).
18-HOLE RECORD: 62, Andy Bean (2nd round, 1981), Greg Norman (2nd round, 1984), Adam Scott (1st round, 2014).
LAST YEAR: It was blustery and it was brutal, but in the end it was Tyrrell Hatton who emerged on top. Bay Hill was a demanding test in 2020 (Matt Fitzpatrick’s Sunday 69 was the only round below 70 on the weekend) but Hatton, despite a double bogey on the par-4 11th Sunday, managed to right the ship with seven straight pars to close out his first PGA TOUR victory (and fifth worldwide). Hatton’s 4-under score over the 72 holes was one of just four sub-par totals for the week – the fewest at Bay Hill since 1980. Past Bay Hill winner Marc Leishman finished runner-up at 3-under while Sungjae Im (3rd/-2) and Bryson DeChambeau (4th/-1) were the only other golfers in red figures for the week. Keith Mitchell, Danny Lee, Rory McIlroy, and Joel Dahmen finished T5 at even par.

Good Luck to everyone this week
Congrats again, Commish...Augusta is that much closer...

Welcome, FSU & Golf...thanks for picking up the tab on the next round...

Tab? What tab? And why wasn't I included? Sheesh.

Oh well, flip the cards and up comes:

Sam Burns
Matthew Fitzpatrick
Max Homa
Jordan Spieth
Oh, I always thought the new player each year (or whenever they enter the PGSF) gets stuck with buying the first round, after their initial foray in to game. Now I am wondering why I received a bill for $686.44 from the Bushwood Gopher in the Hole grill after I joined...?? Took me over three months to clear that out.

Okay, lets try this. I saw most everyone play . Dechambeau was close. Hovland has an amazing attitude. Rory will score points and not win. But could win. Billy H. played as well as I've seen him play in 4 years. Had to see his sorry flipping Gatur bag. Berger ( not playing) looked off. DJ (also not playing this week.) looked like he wanted to go hit balls and not play. Definitely off.
I wish I could have had a video of all the times I saw Rahm ( not playing) stomp around like a 3 year old last week. Brooks ( not playing) is really close. Hatton is defending champ. And played well in other previous years. Homa is a grinder. Matsuyama looked good. Reed was playing well but looked tired yesterday. Especially the back nine. Then there's Louie and Paul Casey.
My guys this week are: McIlroy, Hovland,Matsuyama, Dechambeau.
Replaced Hatton with Matsuyama.

Feeling a little Melancholy as this was traditionally Doral week. Saw a young Tom Weiskopf knock it in the water on 18 to lose to Gardner Dickinson, witnessed Jack's two wins and his playoff loss to Raymond Floyd, saw Tom Shaw, Trevino, Buddy Allin, Gators Andy Bean and Gary Koch, and Seminole Hubie Green all win, walked with pros like Bruce Crampton, Tom Kite, Lanny Wadkins & Tom Watson, Bob Murphy, Miller Barber, Larry Hinson, Hale Irwin & Johnny Miller, remember Norman's wins and his statement that the tour doesn't start til Doral, and saw Tiger for the first time at Doral. Too bad. But will pull it together and have some picks this week. Thanks for the welcome. I'm buying in Tally September 5th.

Rory McIlroy
Matthew Fitzpatrick
Jason Kokrak
Jordan Spieth

Liz - I saw your picks as I was drawing up my list and thought I'd better veer away (but only slightly) so as to not jinx things...No DJ - no concussive meltdowns by me...I like Fitz too, and it was either him or Hovland. I went with Kokrak as a change, hoping its like a soft wedge on small, sloping green...:p

Very very interesting... Appears as though half of the field is starting off on the 18th today.

Mebbe it'll help Sam Burns--he looked like he needs a week off from the strain yesterday. Damnit.

On that note, I'm sure most of you have read it, but I just finished John Feinstein's "A Good Walk Spoiled". If you haven't read it, I highly recommend it; it gives a great deal of insight into how the Tour works, the stress players deal with, and many great anecdotes and stories from the Q School and Ryder Cup matches--all of these back in 1997.

Hovland has to be tired from carrying my team for 3 weeks. I hope he can make it through the weekend

Caddy For Life is an excellent read too. Bruce Edward’s story.

SIAP but why no Koepka or Berger at the API? Seems weird for two Fla boys to skip this one. There were three turds, and all missed the cut (lol).

Koepka didnt put it on his schedule , but they announced today he is dealing with knee issue again, right knee this time so is not playing The Players either, really hope it is something rest can fix.

Berger also didnt have on schedule, moving The Players back to March some players are going to skip to get ready for Sawgrass

Bryson is hard to root for , but man did he knock the heck ou tof that ball yesterday. Impressive performance today, Bay Hill was showing its teeth and he went out and got one under to get the win.

In the PGSF we had 3 players pick Bryson so it comes down to the other picks and it was Matsuyama and Fitzpatrick that secured the win.

Congratulations to @FSU & Golf , in only his second week takes home his first career PGSF weekly crown
