The PGA TOUR is back.

After being put on pause by the COVID-19 pandemic, the TOUR returns to action at the Charles Schwab Challenge, the 75th edition of the tournament hosted at the venerable Colonial Country Club. This is the longest-running TOUR event to be held on the same course.

The top five golfers in the FedExCup standings are in the field, while the event is set to have strongest field of any TOUR event since the first FedExCup Playoffs event in 2019.

FIELD NOTES: Defending champion Kevin Na will return to the site of his four-stroke triumph. It was Na’s first of two wins in the 2019 calendar year. He also won earlier this season at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. Na is 11th in this season’s FedExCup standings. … Sungjae Im, Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy, Brendon Todd, and Webb Simpson, who rank as the top five on the FedExCup standings, will be in the field… Recent Charles Schwab Challenge winners Justin Rose (2018), Kevin Kisner (2017), Jordan Spieth (2016), and Chris Kirk (2015) are back in action at Colonial… Phil Mickelson, a two-time winner at Colonial, will be in the field. … Last year’s Charles Schwab Cup winner on PGA TOUR Champions Scott McCarron is playing, along with fellow PGA TOUR Champions golfers Tom Lehman (winner at Colonial in 1995), Olin Browne (winner at Colonial in 1999), Steve Stricker (winner at Colonial in 2009), and Bernhard Langer.

FEDEXCUP: Winner gets 500 FedExCup points

COURSE: Colonial Country Club, 7,209 yards, par 70. The tournament will be played for the 75th time in 2020, with every event being hosted at Colonial CC. The layout, designed by John Bredemus and Perry Maxwell in Fort Worth, Texas, also hosted THE PLAYERS Championship in 1975, the 1941 U.S. Open, and the 1991 U.S. Women’s Open.

STORYLINES: Sungjae Im, the winner of the Honda Classic, looks to extend his FedExCup lead over Justin Thomas. Im, who has reunited with his caddie Albin Choi from the Honda Classic victory, currently leads the FedExCup standings by 55 points… Rory McIlroy, the No.1-ranked golfer in the world, will make his debut at Colonial… Only one man, Ben Hogan (who the tournament is always associated with) has ever won back-to-back titles at the Charles Schwab Challenge, and he did it twice. Kevin Na looks to pull the same feat.

72-HOLE RECORD: 259, Zach Johnson (2010).

18-HOLE RECORD: 61, Keith Clearwater (2nd round, 1993), Lee Janzen (4th round, 1993), Greg Kraft (3rd round, 1999), Kenny Perry (3rd round, 2003), Justin Leonard (4th round, 2003), Chad Campbell (3rd round, 2004), Kevin Na (4th round, 2018).

LAST TIME: After breaking a seven-year winless drought in 2018, Kevin Na rode a second-round 62 (one off the course record of 61, which he shares with six others) for his second TOUR win in just 10 months. Thanks to final-round 66 Na topped Tony Finau by four shots at Colonial. Andrew Putnam and C.T. Pan finished T3 while Jonas Blixt finished fifth – his only top-10 result of the season.

Welcome to the restart of the golf year.

I think it only fair we make it a majority decision on when to end this years contest. We can still close season at East Lake or carry contest through the Masters.

Not something we have to decide today , but I would be inclined to close at East Lake, then just have great golf threads during football season. .

So, sans the O-Rod that continues to howl in the distance, I go with:

Rory McIlroy
Collin Morikawa
Jon Rahm
Webb Simpson

(The Morikawa pick prompted a long, shrill "Nooooooooooooooooooo" from the woods, but
screw that thing. I'm done with it.)

Interesting that while I was reading this thread today, from the woods behind my house I swear I could here a voice (more like a plaintive wail, actually) saying "What have I done? Why did I do it?"

I saw this and strains from "Welcome Back" and "Baby comeback" alternated in my head...

Then I saw your picks in this post and decided that it would be best not to meddle in 'family business'...and, off the record, 3/4 of your slate are on my list to choose. O-rod may be in for a long, hot summer of disconnect... :D

Nolerball, I subscribe to the theory, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me."

I hope the O-Rod and its "mate" are happy with each other, 'cos I wouldn't use it for firewood at this point. If the noise from the woods gets to be too much, I'll let the dog loose on it.

My suggestion would be to end it when I am leading the field.

I am in favor of ending it in East Lake (at the Tour d'Atlantique). Not sure I can hang on 'til the Masters, with the diesel from Tampa bearing down on me...:D Say, did I ever ask if they gave out any awards for a non-strike shortened season by any chance...? I guess no championships are ever won in March (unless its the ACCBB).

Nice to have golf back.

Bryson needs to push back from the gym, table and supplements. He looks ridiculous , but he is bombing the driver

Phil playing well early, Rose still with a good lead.

How about Tom Lehman , tied for 4th after his 1st round.

DeChambeau looks freakish and I have no idea how he can put on 30 more lbs to get to 270, but damn he is bombing it off the tee

Kinda thinking you don't rue it today.

Yep. And I was going to go with Morikawa over Rahm and said...'what would O-rod have suggested? Go with the youngster from CAL or the Spaniard?' Trying to think like a wood-chip here...nope, dropped Colin and said I'll take the Matador for $200, Alex. What good has it done me...?

And insult to injury, I have stood back from my guy (Spieth) and he runs off a pair of 65s to play in the final pairing tomorrow - yes, its Saturday, I know...but sheesh. Couldn't even lay two bits on that horse...o_O

Remember, when I picked Morikawa, the ORod mocked me from the woods; another reason it won't bark in my house ever again.

They must have the course set up easy because I do not recall scores like this at Colonial

And using a 5.5 degree driver as well. I had no clue they make them with that low of a loft.
