Patton Kizzire hangs on in playoff to win the Sony Open
Two-time Sony winner Jimmy Walker and defending champion Patton Kizzire also spark the roster for the second half of the TOUR’s annual Hawaiian fortnight.
FIELD NOTES: Thomas, DeChambeau and THE PLAYERS Championship winner Webb Simpson are among 22 players slated to hop a flight from this week’s Sentry Tournament of Champions on Maui to play both ends of the Hawaiian double. … Bubba Watson, a three-time winner in 2018, is set for his first appearance at Waialae since the 2010 edition. … Vijay Singh, the 2005 Sony champion, tops a list of four 50-and-over pros getting a head start on the upcoming PGA TOUR Champions opener in Hawaii. Kenny Perry, Steve Stricker and Davis Love III also will tee it up at Waialae. … Peter Jung, 16, gets his first chance to test himself against TOUR competition after winning a qualifier for Hawaiian amateurs. … Other exemptions include Asia-Pacific Amateur winner Takumi Kanaya and a pair of Japan Tour players currently ranked among the world’s top 90 – No. 53 Shugo Imahira and No. 90 Yuta Ikeda.

FEDEXCUP: Winner receives 500 points.
STORYLINES: Thomas returns to the site where he took dead aim at the TOUR record book, opening with a 59 on the way to putting his name next to the 36-, 54- and 72-hole records. Though Thomas tied for 14th in his title defense, he hasn’t carded anything higher than a 68 in his past eight rounds at Waialae. … DeChambeau takes aim at a fourth victory in a five-month span, dating back to his two wins in last year’s FedExCup Playoffs. He also won the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in October. … Hideki Matsuyama is among 13 Asian pros seeking to become the fourth from that continent to win at Waialae. Korean K.J. Choi (2008) was the last Asian player to win the event, preceded by Fiji’s Singh (2005) and Japan’s Isao Aoki (1983). … Sungjae Im, last year’s Web.com Tour earnings leader, and Sanderson Farms champion Cameron Champ are among eight golfers set to make their TOUR-high seventh starts of 2018-19. … Since the Sentry Tournament of Champions relocated to Hawaii in 1999, 14 of 20 Sony Open winners have prevailed after playing Kapalua the previous week.
COURSE: Waialae Country Club, 7,044 yards, par 70. Dating back to 1927 on land leased from the Bernice Bishop estate, Waialae remains the only home the Sony Open has ever known. Part of a joint effort with the Royal Hawaiian hotel to help attract travel to the islands, designers Seth Raynor and Charles Banks borrowed liberally from signature ideas at other courses. Imitation can be found from the very start as No. 1 introduces features found at the Road Hole of St. Andrews’ Old Course. Also, the seventh green is bisected by a deep “Biarritz” gully and No. 17 has a sharply sloping “Redan” green. Waialae’s 54th consecutive year as a PGA TOUR host is now exceeded by only three other venues.
72-HOLE RECORD: 253, Justin Thomas (2017).
18-HOLE RECORD: 59, Justin Thomas (1st round, 2017).
LAST YEAR: Kizzire prevailed in the TOUR’s longest playoff in nearly six years, outlasting James Hahn on the sixth extra hole to become the first multiple winner of 2017-18. Hahn’s closing 62 made up a six-shot deficit on Kizzire, and they matched three pars and two birdies over the first five extra holes before Hahn’s par attempt lipped out at the par-3 17th. Hahn also missed birdie tries from 10 and 6 feet that could have ended it, and Kizzire – who previously won the Mayakoba Golf Classic in the fall – stayed alive with a clutch up-and-down from the bunker for par on the first playoff hole. Tom Hoge missed a chance to win in regulation, taking a one-shot lead to the 16th tee before a double bogey from a greenside bunker dropped him behind Kizzire and Hahn.
