• CHARITY: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, established by the late entertainer Danny Thomas to find cures for children with cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Since joining forces in 1970, the tournament has raised more than $30 million for hospital research.
• FIELD WATCH: Dustin Johnson, the 2012 St. Jude champion, is joined by Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson to headline the final tuneup before the U.S. Open. … Two-time St. Jude champion David Toms, who tops the all-time earnings list in Memphis, is back for his 25th appearance. … Lee McCoy, who placed fourth at the Valspar Championship as an amateur, is among a handful of new college grads set for their pro debuts. The Georgia alum is joined by Robby Shelton (Alabama) and Matt NeSmith (South Carolina). ... Philip Barbaree, who won last summer’s U.S. Junior Amateur in an epic comeback, will test himself against PGA TOUR competition for the first time.

• LAST YEAR: Fabian Gomez became the fifth Argentine to ever win a PGA TOUR event, using a 4-under-par 66 to pull away from Greg Owen on the final day. Gomez and Owen shared the 54-hole lead, but Gomez went bogey-free over his final 13 holes while Owen struggled to a 70. They remained tied at the turn before Gomez stuck his tee shot at the par-3 11th to set up an 8-foot birdie. Two more birdies followed on the back nine, eventually recording a four-shot victory as Owen faltered. Phil Mickelson tied for third after a closing 65, rolling home a 25-foot birdie that nearly lipped out before dropping in. That left him five shots behind Gomez, tied with four other players. Gomez joined Angel Cabrera, Jose Coceres, Andres Romero and Roberto de Vicenzo as Argentines to win on TOUR.
• STORYLINES: Johnson, who hasn't won since his heartbreaking three-putt at last year's U.S. Open, seeks to build some momentum heading to Oakmont next week. An opening 64 vaulted him to the first-day Memorial lead, though he fell back with Friday 71. ... Mickelson, a Sunday contender each of the past three years, seeks to sharpen his game ahead of the only major he hasn’t won. The Hall of Famer came to Memorial with three missed cuts in his previous four starts. … A U.S. Open berth remains available for anyone who moves into the top 60 of the world rankings after the St. Jude’s conclusion. Among those hoping to move up: Gomez and Ryan Palmer, who tied for third at Colonial.
• SHORT CHIPS: Gomez was just the sixth St. Jude winner to hail from outside U.S. shores, joining Nick Price (1993, ’98), Gary Player (1974), Greg Norman (1997) and Lee Westwood (2010). … No winner of the PGA TOUR stop preceding the U.S. Open has gone on to capture the Open. Overall, just 11 men have claimed a major the week after winning on TOUR, last done two years ago by Rory McIlroy (WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and PGA Championship). … Three of the tournament’s past five winners have made it their maiden TOUR victory: Harrison Frazar (2011), Harris English (2013) and Gomez.
