Some guy crashed into me a couple weeks ago during a snowfall, lost control traveling in the opposite direction and semi- tboned me on my drivers side. Took out the front and rear quarters as well as the doors. Hit both the wheels, broke my front tie rod. I went with his carrier{Geico} for obvious reasons, also avoiding my 500 deductible. Now, two weeks later their rep called me, they want to total the vehicle, claiming 4-6 weeks of my rental car cost, in addition to the body, tire, wheels, also possible suspension and column damage. He's saying at least 14,000 damage, he wants to pay me 27,000. It's a 2011 Explorer Limited, loaded to the max. Paid 30,000 in Jan 2011 for it, 15,000 of it cash. It had 29,000 miles at purchase, has a little under 50,000 now. Waiting to hear back from my Progressive agent and the body shop. It's at the Ford dealership where I bought it. Thoughts? This scenario has never happened to me before, this is my fourth Explorer, and this is a heartbreaker because this is my favorite.

So 4 years and you lose 3k? pretty good return......

Take the money and put down a huge deposit on another one.

Or.

See how much Ford wants to fix it, see if Geico will sell it back to you. It will have a salvage title on it though.

Agreed. Quickly take the deal before he realizes his apparent mathematical mistake.

Doesn't your back hurt a little? Should get you another $5,000 minimum.

I assume that the $27K payout includes a waiver that you have to sign stating that you are medically OK and that you can't seek any future monies for injuries.

If you weren't hurt, take the $27K, I think it's a no-brainer. If they fix it up, I can guarantee that you will have nothing but trouble with it from here on out.

My in-laws house burnt down, and their Avalanche was parked right in front of the garage and sustained quite a bit of damage. They thought the insurance company would total the truck, but they didn't and the insurance company paid to fix the Avalanche and my in-laws have had nothing but trouble since then, including a blown transmission.
