POST-PRACTICE UPDATE
Jimbo was kind of quick after practice because he was going to one of his sons' youth league games, I believe. But he was in a pretty good mood ... said he's been happy with what they've accomplished in the off week and the way guys have worked.
One of the most interesting topics was the play of sophomore center Ryan Hoefeld. Jimbo said Hoefeld has really come on in the last couple of weeks and that you can see a major difference from where he was when he was thrown into action a year ago. He said it is a lot to ask of a redshirt freshman to play center at this level, and you get the sense Corey Martinez is experiencing a lot of the problems that Hoefeld did last year. That's definitely something to watch for next week.
As for the rest of the OL, Jimbo said they've had a good week of practice.
As for Everett Golson, Jimbo was asked how he's coming in terms of understanding the offense and whether he was starting to get it. He didn't exactly give a strong endorsement: "I hope so. We'll find out. He needs to do a much better job though. Needs to do a much better job."
Jimbo confirmed our report that Mario Pender had a collapsed lung after practice on Tuesday, and he said he went and saw him in the hospital last night. He said Mario could be released from the hospital today or tomorrow and is probably out 10-12 days. He said it was a freak play -- not a big hit.
We'll have more later. But here's the video of Jimbo talking after practice.
EARLY UPDATE
It's a nice, overcast, moderately cool afternoon as the team hits the practice fields for a practice in full pads.
This is the last practice we'll have access to during the bye week ... and we'll speak with Coach Fisher after the practice around 6 p.m.
From an injury standpoint, RB Mario Pender was not there (as Gene reported yesterday, due to a collapsed lung). We'll try to get confirmation on his expected return from Jimbo after practice. But we're hearing it could be by Wake Forest.
OL Chad Mavety was not in full pads. He was doing rehab inside of the practice facility while the rest of the team worked outside.
RB Dalvin Cook did not have on his blue non-contact jersey while we were there. It could go on later though.
In terms of the drills we saw, Ryan Hoefeld was taking reps with the first team at center. He has done that before just to get work with the starters. We'll probably ask Jimbo about his progress again today. The rest of the starting line was the same -- Johnson, Are, Bell and Kelly.
Not sure what was up with this -- and it could be nothing -- but it didn't look like Everett Golson was throwing during the early practice drills ... at least during the portion I watched. He would do the footwork and act like he was going to throw, but then would never release the ball and follow through. Wondering if he has a sore arm or something. Will definitely ask after practice. Whatever it was didn't appear to be major ... he was still engaged and talking with Coach Sanders, etc. But the only passes I saw came from Maguire, Cosentino, Francois and the walk-ons.
On the defensive side, Brad Lawing was spending a lot of time with the DEs on using their hands as pass-rushers.
And that's about it for now. Will have plenty more after practice, probably around 6:30.
