Well that sucks - I liked them...

"Dolores O’Riordan, lead singer for Irish rock band The Cranberries, has died. The news has been confirmed by the BBC and by Irish news service RTE, which reports that O’Riordan died suddenly in London of as-yet-unknown causes. In a statement, her publicist says, “The lead singer with the Irish band The Cranberries was in London for a short recording session. No further details are available at this time.” She was 46."

Always liked them as well.

Brings up another point about celebrities dying, especially musicians: why do people care when entertainers like Prince, MJ, etc die? It's not like they were making good music anymore. It's not like someone dying in their prime like Hendrix or Cinain who still most likely had much left to contribute.

If their music means something to you (and music means a lot to many people) then by association the artist means something to you.

I love music, it does mean something to me, but if all the good music is behind them, then they might as well just be any other person I don't know ow who died that day.

Damn-it! I loved her voice. Her accent and that voice was always so beautiful to my ears.

It really hammers home an individual's mortality. The people we loved in our youth are dying. It's a reminder that we, too, will get old and die. It's a reminder that our youth is gone and we can never have it back.

That makes some sense to me. I feel like that about people who are alive. For example, athleof my generation who are now head coaches.

This is what I was going to say. When people you grew up watching or listening to start dying, it makes you feel old. When celebrities your own age start dying (especially when it's natural causes), it makes you feel even older. It sucks to get old, just like I'm sure it sucks to die. It's inevitable, but it's not like you're looking forward to it - just hoping to delay it as long as you can.

This. I would add it is especially true for people not too young (don't have feelings yet of nostalgia/getting old) and quite not too old (in the next phase of life when it is their actual friends and peers dying). So say like 33-65. I am 45 and certainly in that "sweet spot". It is similar when hearing of a former professor or one of your old friend's parents passing. You may not have seen that person in 20-30 years or really knew them-but is a bummer.

Are we thinking drug overdose? Seems most likely cause here.
She had back issues so accidental bad mix of alcohol and painkillers maybe? You read some of the stuff on her mental condition last 3-4 years and I suspect suicide and back issues were a cover story.

Can believe that. With Prince he was hooked on pain killers too. So very sad either way.

i was just responding, tongue in cheek, to Triple R's bombs and guns quote. But now I'm wondering, what is the statute of limitations on gallows humor?

I only commented because it was among the first things that popped into my head, but you actually said it :)

You waited a full day to drop the hackiest joke possible.

Think about that.

First I had read about it was in this thread. When I’m not at work, I’m not online and usually don’t watch much tv. Sorry I didn’t run to Warchant and post first thing like some people.
