So sorry for your loss. It is so hard losing such an important part of the family. They are like children.
I always felt like that when I lost dogs, but then I had my son. There is no way I would make that comparison any more. Having said that, it's not easy. Lost my German Shepherd a few years ago and still miss him.

Lost my 15 1/2 year old choc lab in Jan. Both the kids have left home so it was just me and the wife. Glad the kids were not here to see or the wife did not come out to the shop and catch me bawling like a girl. In the last 3-4 years I have had 2 black labs (both 6 week pups) I had hope would see how the old dog behaved and was a great watch dog. Not to be, if possible I have had two totally stupid black labs. The first one got snake bit and died, the other one is 15 months old, comes from a great line of labs, but is the dumbest dog I have every seen. Started working with her when she was 6 weeks on fetching learning basic commands. Never seen a lab before that will not fetch and is afraid of water. The things she has destroyed easily exceeds $4000.00 in value. She has actually tore a piece of metal lose on my shop and proceeded to have a field day in the shop while I was at work. I now keep her full time in a 10X10 kennel which I hate.

He was having a real hard time last night. We've been trying to prepare him, and I think it finally set in.
Breaks my heart.

So sorry for you. Always a difficult process. But death is part of life, unfortunately, and this is actually a great learning experience for your son. I know it doesn’t seem that way to anyone, now, but life is a mosaic of ups and downs. Be strong and best wishes.....only warm memories will remain after this immediate pain subsides. Godspeed.

Sad day indeed. When I lost mine after 14 years it was exponentially worse than when I lost my ex-wife of 14 years. A round of Macallan 17 for everyone at the bar tonight.
Nice call both on the Macallan 17 and the bird...

We also have a 11 yo yellow lab. She's a bit special herself. She loves to chase and go after things you throw, but bringing it back? Not so much haha. We never got her in the water, because Jäger was petrified.
But I'm sure happy we have her.

I think my chocolate was the exception to the stupid stages labs go through and she spoiled us. Was never a digger, did not tear stuff up, easily trained and the most perfect combo of a dog who would hunt with me and still be the most perfect pet in the world.

Yeah I think all Lab owners have that one lab in their life that was so perfect. Then you spend the rest of your life trying to get another one like that.

I made this mistake when I got my new black lab mix. Loved my first, wanted to get another to fill the same role. The new dog is so different. It really took a while to shift from wishing she was a continuation of Abby vs accepting she looked the same but was worlds apart. Likely going to get a different breed all together next time just to move on.

My dogs love me 24-7. They never bite me or have bad moods. They never ask for anything. Pretty inexpensive. Wifey and kids are very different. Just saying.

Very sorry for your loss Sarah, hope the happy/fun/maddening and special memories you have of Jager make each day a little easier for you and your family.
