RIP John McCain

“Because his father was named commander of US forces in Vietnam that same year, the North Vietnamese offered to release McCain early. He refused unless every prisoner of war taken before him was also released. He was soon placed in solitary confinement, where he would remain for the next two years. He was not released until March of 1973.”

We should all aspire to such dignity and fortitude!

RIP John McCain. I didn't know him but my wife, kids and her family knew and met him several times; my wife's family knew him much better than my wife and kids. I do know many of his friends from the POW group and a relative ran his 2000 Campaign in VA. Like everyone McCain had a number of things in his life he is not proud of; but at the end of the day I think for the most part he tried to do the right thing.

R.I.P. Senator McCain...I was just reading that he and Teddy Kennedy died on the same date 9 years apart of the same cancer. o_O

that was fast. seems like only few hours had passed since I heard about suspending treatment. I look at facebook and @BigDog214 has posted an RIP.

RIP....He loved America and I will give him that but if there were a VH1 Behind the Story on his life you guys wouldn't be putting him on the pedestal most want to...(and this has absolutely ZERO to do with politics)
Why don't you elaborate?

RIP.

I had the honor of meeting and talking with McCain a few times when I was young. He seemed like a great guy who was truly interested in getting to know me, unlike some of the Senators, who were very dismissive of "the help".

If I had to guess it would be about his ex-wife? McCain wasn't very principled early in his life. The guy did some nice and good things in his life but there is a reason his POW group doesn't have him at their reunions. I will leave it at that.

Partially on his wife I would guess stemming from the Keating 5 corruption scandal. I am not sure what he did would be considered shocking anymore as in the expectations of corruption from our leaders and the enrichment of family members is common place now.

I am not going to turn this thread; but the issue with his 1st wife had nothing to do with the Keating five. Let's just say he had the chance to marry up financially and he took it. McCain is a guy that went through a number of terrible things for this nation; but at the same time he made some very bad decisions. That is all.

“He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone”

We all have skeletons! RIP
My priest told a joke during a sermon when I attended church as a kid:

He was telling the story about how Jesus said that to the mob and then a single rock goes flying past him toward the prostitute. Jesus then exasperatedly exclaims, "Mom!"

He retired from the Navy in 1981. What inside info could you possibly have? Or maybe you also only know what you’re told?

Either way, I think most are just saying he was (self-admittedly) not a saint but on balance he tried to do the right thing more often than not. Good enough for me.

Having recently lost my 81 year old father on August 11th, I can say now is not the time to speak about someones character. My dad was a Navy Chief and served on the USS Oriskany in the early 70s. A liitle after McCain.

There will pleanty of time after his family grieves to take your shots.
