POST-SCRIMMAGE UPDATES
First off, those guys earned their scholarships today. It was super hot and humid, and they scrimmaged from like noon to 2 p.m. Again, that's good preparation for the USF game in week 2, which will kick off at 11:30 a.m. But man, it was steamy.

And several groups of players stayed late to talk with position coaches and each other. Jalen Ramsey spent some time talking to a few offensive players. The defensive tackles had a long talk (and some up-downs) with Odell Haggins. Other DBs stayed late as well. Seemed like a lot of heart-to-hearts.

As for what Jimbo had to say:

He said there were a lot of good moments -- said some of the young players "really flashed." But still looking for more consistency.

Said the quarterbacks played "pretty consistently." Said their stats will look good. Said they did a good job with run-checks. But he saw some little things he wants to clean up, such as game management. But felt good about them overall.

If there's any separation between Golson and Maguire, he's still not saying.

Said Mario Pender looked really good again.

On the WRs and TEs, said they played pretty well but need to fix some minor mistakes in situations like third downs (guessing he means knowing where the marker is, etc.) ... He actually might have tipped his hand about the offensive approach this season, saying, "When you run the football like I think we can do, you've got to be able to pick up a lot third-and-3 to 5's and stuff like that." That's another sign that Jimbo might think they can be a run-first team with this OL (and some inconsistency with the QBs and WRs). Later, he said the WRs made some more big plays -- Ermon Lane apparently caught one deep ball -- but they also had some mistakes such as holding on run plays. Said they have to play smarter.

I asked about Alec Eberle at center, and he said today was not his best day. Had some snap issues, especially in the shotgun. (Eberle was one of the last players off the field, doing some work on his snaps) ... As for the OL overall, Fisher said they need to start making some choices and isolate the 8 guys who are gonna play. Not ready to set on the starting 5, but have to pick those main 8, he said.

Defensively, he singled out Jalen Ramsey, and then DeMarcus Walker at times.

We also talked to Mario Pender and Jalen Ramsey. Mario said he felt great to get out there ... said he's 100 percent. Said the few days off were actually good for him because his legs are fresher and he got some good mental reps. Ramsey wasn't very talkative, but he said the defense played pretty well overall.

We'll have more coverage shortly.

PRE-SCRIMMAGE UPDATES
The team is holding its second preseason scrimmage today inside Doak Campbell Stadium. It is closed to the media and fans.

As usual, we got to see a lot of special teams before the scrimmage. And there were some interesting notes from that portion:

Derwin James is the only freshman on both the punt coverage team and the kickoff coverage team. Again, that’s a great sign for his impact as a freshman.

The first-string kickoff coverage team was: Jalen Ramsey, Tyrell Lyons, Trey Marshall, Derwin James, Johnathan Vickers, Jacob Pugh, Terrance Smith, Tyler Hunter, Marquez White and Nate Andrews.

The second-string kickoff coverage team was: Lorenzo Phillips, Ermon Lane, Ro’Derrick Hoskins, Reggie Northrup, Sh’Mar Kilby-Lane, Josh Sweat, Lamarcus Brutus, Da’Vante Phillips and a couple of other guys that I didn’t get the numbers of. Think one was a walk-on.

From a team standpoint, the first-team OL was the same as yesterday: Rod Johnson, Kareem Are, Alec Eberle, Wilson Bell and Derrick Kelly.

We got to see the QBs and WRs do some extended pre-scrimmage work (more than we do at practice), and all of the QBs looked pretty good. Deondre Francois has an absolute cannon. The ball really zips out of his hand. Everett Golson puts more touch on the ball and is a little more accurate. Sean Maguire is kind of cross between the two in that he puts a lot of pace on the ball too, but misses some routine throws occasionally. J.J. Cosentino has a very big arm as well, but his accuracy might not be quite as good as the rest, based on the limited action we saw. The receivers were pretty good for the most part, but there were a few drops and/or not-clean catches. A couple of the WRs/TEs looked a little dead-legged to me, which wouldn’t be unusual for this stage of camp.

INJURY NOTES
OFFENSIVE LINE:
Cole Minshew was walking with a crutch and had his ankle in a boot
Abdul Bello was out and had the right knee brace on still
Ryan Hoefeld was still out

RECEIVERS:
Nyqwan Murray was out with the hand injury
Auden Tate and Ja’Vonn Harrison were out
George Campbell was in pads but not sure if he’s full go

DEFENSIVE BACKS
Tarvarus McFadden was out.
Marcus Lewis was on crutches

DEFENSIVE LINE
Justin Shanks is still out

LINEBACKER
Sh’Mar Kilby-Lane, who has been in blue non-contact jersey for most of camp, didn’t have it on today. But not sure if that means he’s doing everything.

That's about it for now. Will have plenty of coverage after the scrimmage, closer to 3 p.m.
