I’m heading to Savannah this week with the fam. Kids are 6 and 4. Suggestions would be appreciated.

If stuck with the wife, then Olde Pink House, Circa 1875, The Grey, Cotton & Rye, And Husk probably in that order.

If stuck with the wife and kids then get some of the allegedly “first” original chicken fingers at Spankys.

It’s a family reunion so I’ll probably be able to ditch the kids with some relatives for at least one night. Maybe two.

I know it’s hot as balls. Any suggestions of what to do with the ankle biters during the day?

May take the boy to the 8th Airforce Museum.

Lots of fun things to do in Sav. with or without kids.
With kids- 8th Air force Museum I haven't been but my kids went and it was cool. Pirate House restaurant a little pricey but the kids will like it. River Street and the area around it will be fun. If you have the time, Harbour Town in Sea Pines HHI. Not sure where you are watching fireworks but the 18th Green in Harbour town HHI Sea Pines is great. Set up chairs, bring a cooler, football, soccer ball etc. Kids will run around and play. Fireworks are off a barge in the water in front of you.
Without Kids - Lunch at the Green Truck, Kevin Berry's and make sure you go upstairs. Vic the owner has an incredible tribute to the military up there. Maybe a Ghost tour too.

I always make it to Kevin Barry’s. Good spot.

How far is HHI?

We are staying at The Bohemian which has a nice roof top bar. I was hoping to watch fireworks from there. I don’t know where they do them in Savannah. But I can only imagine from the river on a barge? Right? I guess I should look that up.

How is Tybee Island? Any local spots out that way for shrimp?

Tybee is trashy. But there’s a great dive bar, Doc’s.

If you are downtown Sav which I believe The Bohemian is then it is about 45 minutes max. I don't know where they do them in Sav. I doubt they do them on a barge on the river, just to close to stuff.
Tybee is still trash, but nicer trash than it was 10 years ago. I am sure there are some cool things to do on Tybee; I just don't go there since I live on HHI. Another idea is take the reunion to HHI for a day and bike the whole Island. There are bike paths covering the entire place If that is something you want to do let me know and I can make some recs for lunch spots and you can rent whatever you need bike wise. I would just reserve your bikes early since it is the 4th week.
If you come here let me know maybe we can link up. I am in town till the 4th at 1800, then I have to fly to Atlanta to get to Benning. Really the lesser of 2 evils for me. Could fly at 1800 the 4th or get up at 0330 and fly or drive. Just don't feel like getting up that early on the 5th and being a zombie by noon.
There is also a maritime museum in Sav. that is pretty cool. If you haven't been to Sav. the entire downtown is really cool with lots of interesting things to see. Lots of history in Sav.; just not sure a lot of it is something the kids would like at that age. 5 years from now they would like it.

they have the hop on hop off buses if you're into that

if you don't have the kiddies you can do one of those bar hops where the patrons all pedal the thing around town. have to get reservations.

I liked the river area and there was a new Orleans themed restaurant I liked. Went to pink house and some other place (I think it had a French name?) but they were a little foo-foo for me.

Hilton Head is basically an hour when you factor in normal traffic, google maps will say 45 mins or so even though it’s only 30 miles....and it’s still wrong unless you’re driving at low traffic flow times.

Honestly as far as both Tybee and Hilton Head, the best thing I can say is that they ARE beaches....but they’re not very nice unless you can get on a private beach at HHI and even then it’s very blah. I’m not a fan of US Atlantic beaches outside of Florida, OBX and Cumberland Island plus some of the Golden Isles near the Florida border. The water isn’t particularly clean as there’s lots of little rivers with various polluters (wood mills, factories, chemical plants, etc...) dumping in nitrates and phosphates which cause algae blooms and even worse stuff. The sand is not very white and isn’t very fine, it’s pretty coarse and an ugly offwhite/smokers teeth color. When I visit my relatives in Savannah (an Uncle who was VP of GA Power and his offspring), IF we went to the beach we’d take one of his boats (back in the day he had several, a waterskiing/“speed” boat, a typical little pleasure boat, a shrimping and fishing boat and an airboat, now he’s down to just the fishing and pleasure boats) out to Little Tybee, Wassaw or one of the other little secluded island. Even those are not incredibly fantastic, there’s at least twenty beaches in the panhandle and probably forty or more in Florida I’d rather go to first BUT it’s much nicer than Tybee or the public beaches at HHI.

If you want to make the beach part of your trip I’d suggest 1) renting a boat or charter to Little Tybee or Wassaw or 2) seeing if you can still get a permit and ferry ride to Cumberland Island. CI is an all day trip as it’s an hour and a half or so from Savannah and you need to be there early to get on the ferry, BUT once you get there it’s pretty magical with ruined antebellum mansions to explore, wild horses everywhere you go and giant secluded beaches where I get %+%*ed if I can still see another person off in the distance (side note, if you go there without kids it’s a great place for some beachside “not so quiet time” under a beach blanket or a beach shelter you hike onto the island). It may be too late to make arrangements to CI as they have a low tourist cap, but it would be worth hunting for a spot if you can get it.

It’s been years since I’ve been for the fourth but I believe you will be able to see it from your hotel on River Street.

So yeah....guess which one I make a priority to go to at least every other year if not every year and frequently camp overnight, then guess which two I go to only if we have nothing better to do and which two I try to avoid unless guiltripped into going.

THIS WAS A VERY RELEVANT THING TO INCLUDE.

I don't know I was just wondering the other day, how many boats does tribe's uncle who was the VP of Georgia power have left? He had to add something since google only gives you so much.

Free yes they do the fireworks over the river so you should have a great spot to see them at The Bohemian. I always loved that rooftop bar. The Might 8th is a great little museum. Last time I was there, a WWII vet was working there and answered questions for as long as people asked. It was pretty neat. Oatland Island is fun to take kids too as well. Bring bug spray!

I'll be the Debbie Downer and remind you of the crime, especially on the 4th. Last year there was a shooting in City Market that led to a chase and a couple people were killed.

Eh he probably has me on ignore since I called him out on benching 500lbs or something with only a year of training. Hey but I am game Tribe is a fun guy; I will just have to kick up my google skills in order to keep up.

Yea sadly crime in Sav is really high and I know you will but keep good SA though. You can be walking in Sav. enjoying the sights and the next thing you know you are in a neighborhood you don't want to be in.

Ah, I see back to your lies again that’s not even remotely close to what I said. I did say something semimean in response but then I remembered I’m a better person than you as I don’t stalk random people to the dump so I’m back to being at peace with the world.

Ah your so cute you try and disengage but you can't help yourself with the little shot. See that is the difference between you and me. I own things when I am wrong and you just try and continue with the lies and then try and make comments like your above it all. Really sad since you probably are a somewhat successful guy (well at least your uncle is), but it just isn't enough for you. Just gotta add on to it with lies.

See here you are testing my politeness and I’m just going to ignore it and you. Think what you want but get to work on your anger issues stat.

Test are good they build character. I am not mad, I am sad for you. Please don't get all un-polite on me, not sure I could take angry, un-polite tribe; I might just go into the fee-tile position. Oh the horror of angry tribe.
Oh and let's not pretend you will ignore me, you can't help yourself, you gotta always have the last word. Kind of like injecting political stuff into threads to get them locked; another thing you are the best at.

This is a real question. Are you in fact a four year old with colic?

Just watch out for any driver coming over from Hilton Head that wants you to meet him at the dump and go light on the Call A Cabs and the Chatham Artillery Punches and you’ll have a good time.
Weak sauce. Try better I know you can for goodness sake you went to Bill and Mary. Like I said you can't help yourself. Remember this " I did say something semimean in response but then I remembered I’m a better person than you" Yep your a better person than everyone; heck your uncle who worked for Ga Power as a VP had 3 boats. You might think about changing your name to IMNOTREALLYinSECURE or maybe IMNOTREALLYACLOWN. Just a thought. Anything I can do to help you with your insecurity issues just ask.

One of the two of us always starts ^*%* then freaks out when they get the mildest comeback. Guess which one started %*^* in this thread (and every other one)?

I seem to recall posting helpful information having nothing whatsoever to do with you, when you had to launch into an attack on me. Two in fact before I bothered to reply. And I wouldn’t have bothered but bullies only understand one thing and that’s a quick punch in the mouth because they think being gentlemanly is weak. And you’re a bully.

^^^Good lord you two. Am I going to have to separate you?!^^^

Hey Free, I believe Paula Deen has a restaurant in Savannah. Maybe check it out. I also had a good Italian meal at Corleone's years ago.

Obviously you couldn’t understand why I bothered to include it. It’s because 1) typically travelers don’t bring boats and 2) you needed different types of boats to land safely and get back out on the two islands I named and the small “river” islands we would grill out on in private. I’m sure the others figured it out from the context. Why did I include he was a GA Power VP? Because those like yourself would wonder how he could afford 4 boats. I was skipping the explanation expecting you to be able to figure out why it’s pertinent but I gave you too much credit.

If that helps you feel better about it then good for you. C'mon man you can come up with a better explanation than that.

I had a fast paced few days at work and missed this! Hilarious.

Either way thanks for the responses and the battle royal. Kevin Barry's is in the bottom of my hotel! I have a feeling I'm going to stay fairly lubed up.

Went to the Pirate's house last night when we got to town, kids loved it.

Hope the weather is good for fireworks tonight, will try to watch them from the roof. I'll post some pics as they come.
