Semifinals on NYE

Can anyone explain to me how this makes any sense? This will kill the ratings as there are a lot of casual fans who aren't going to stay in on NYE to watch football. It's also weird to have the main course (the semifinals) be before the appetizers (other four main bowls). Last year was essentially perfect, and got massive ratings, why would they mess with that? I really hope it's not entirely to appease the Rose Bowl.
