So is anybody going to bother getting CBS All Access

I truly enjoyed episode 3. The ending made me angry, but I think it hit on a lot of important social themes. It was basically a discussion of society trying to force others to fit the mold of happy white America. So it had a lot of issues discussing racial and sexual orientation. I felt it very specifically was trying to discuss trans issues, but also hitting on others.

In the end, the government of their people were wrong and the parents decided they will love their child no matter what. I'd have preferred a different ending, and maybe they're setting up something else down the road. I don't know.

Couldn’t agree more. And it was basically the first “true” sci-fi storyline wherein the human condition and ethics are examined through a lense of a technologically advanced world. Just because something is set in a technologically advanced world like Star Wars and Dune doesn’t make them automatically sci-fi, it’s basically fantasy that is set in a tech advanced setting. Sometimes series like ST:TOS and ST:TNG will have a couple of sci-fantasy episodes mixed with their “hard” sci-fi episodes. And this is the first episode I would consider of Orville to be a true sci-fi episode. The second one was a decent blend of fantasy and hard sci-fi but mainly going over to fantasy. And the first episode had little in the way of an examination of ethics and the human condition.

So I’m hoping this turn will be permanent and the low brow and frankly unintelligent typical Seth MacFarlane humor gets phased out (pun intended) for a wittier and snappier dialogue based humor ala Supernatural, Firefly, Fargo, Lucifer, etc... My problem with the humor hasn’t even been that it’s usually crass and “foul”, I don’t mind it if it was handled smartly like in South Park or Preacher. The problem is Seth usually crawls right to the dumbest person in his audience and settles in barely north of there.

I enjoyed both ST: Discovery and Orville. I find the humor in Orville a little off-putting at times, but I still like the show in general. I didn't mind the 3rd episode of Orville at all, I thought it was thought provoking and interesting. Like others said, the ending made me a little angry, but not at the show, just with the result of the "trial", but like in life, not everything works out to be fair. In the end, they decided to love the child no matter what and that was enough of a silver lining for me.

And, I already had CBS all-access since I cut the cord 2 years ago.

Yep, and in fact I thought it was a ballsy ending (pun intended) rather than the typically nice, happy ending of 99% of Star Trek episodes. It actually gives me hope that IF they get to continue the series it may continue to take a more adult and intellectual course than what I initially feared. Honestly, I didn’t have much hope for it when it was announced but I genuinely prefer it so far even with the %*%* humor to the first two episodes of Star Trek Discovery.

So far it feels far more like Star Trek than anything else Star Trek in a long time. I enjoy the humor from time to time, but I do hope they go more the Firefly humor. Right now it definitely feels like a show trying a few different directions and not sure what it wants to be yet. I'm ok with it being a few as long as it doesn't become the crass Seth. So far it hasn't, and that's been good.

What are you talking about? It didn't hit on any themes. The ship is full of all races and species from across the galaxy. The white guy didn't know the capital of America so we can gather he is from somewhere else or America is not what it currently is. The gay couple is accepted as normal and no themes or issue are brought to light to discuss because there aren't any in this world. The status of the "industrial polluted" planet shown was accepted and even joked about. The premise of how one of the characters changed their mind was smh silly. The trial was idiotic and far from clever. Where is the Kirk/Spock or McCoy using their intellect to shine light and stand up against this chaos? The loan female on the planet ends up being one of their greatest inspiration writers yet her wisdom and experience is ignored. The baby's gender is forced mutilated via government control without consent from one of the parents or the child itself. Sure the parents will love their children has nothing to do with "acceptance" most parents love their children.

awful....simply awful

The Theme doesn't have to be explicitly stated to be there. You truly don't see how the theme was about Trans issues and a world that wants to force people to live lives other than the life they were born to live? Yeah in the end the terrible forced sex change happened and we were supposed to be angry. It was definitely meant to make us consider how those who are born outside of our expected gender profiles feel and how wrong it is for us to force them to try to live as something they're not.

Yes I was angry at the ending. I think that was the point. If you're not angry at America doing the same things then you should consider why.

Yep, i will stick with Orville for free and CBS can have their pay per viewing shows.

I’ll catch one more episode this Sunday with my free week trial and if I don’t think there’s substantial improvement between the second and the third episode I’m going to cancel and just wait until they’re all online and then use my wife’s free week to binge them. I assume there will either NOT be a second season or else they’ll just slap it on Netflix or Hulu or put it on air. I don’t think it will continue as a CBS All Access show.

As a matter of fact I read an article that claimed the only reason All Access was created was to increase carriage rates in CBS with cable companies and to manipulate better deals with the main providers (Netflix, Hulu and/or Amazon).

As far as Discovery went, they really made a poor decision showing only the first half of the two-parter. Because while I was generally unimpressed other than with the special effects and high glossiness/professionalism of the shots and the acting of some of the actors, the plot was relatively boring and not “Star Trekky” ie hard sci-fi at all. It was just a futuristic military plot in lines with Space Above and Beyond (in fact it would have fit almost perfectly in that universe just replace Klingons with Chigs, the rest of the betrayals of principal characters, infighting amongst the ranks and war themes were already perfect).

Yep. And further, they attempted a very Star Trek esque trial reminiscent of the mismeasure of man from tng.

That has been my problem with the movies in addition to some plot problems.

They've taken what was in form wrath of khan and stripped it of its substance. In the new version, khan and Kirk should have parted as neutral....or Kirk could have pursued khan for blowing up the base. Instead khan mindlessly attacks Kirk et al. What was the goal? Why was he mad at Kirk, who helped him save his crew and defeat the criminal, admiral? In the original timeline , khan had a reason to hate Kirk. That's not so, here.

yep, JJ Abrams has made some entertaining movies with his Star Treks, but they're not Star Trek. They've lost the soul of Trek. Sometimes Trek got really bogged down and could use some better entertainment/humor but it's desire to change the discussion and move us forward as people was what made it so great. The new Treks have lost all of that.

If you still really enjoy the original Star Trek and want to see more of that, there's a group who has done some amazing films themselves to continue the final two years of Star Trek. They've even got Scotty's son playing Scotty and brought back some of the original actors as guest stars. The production values, sets, costumes, etc... are very much the original Star Trek. Unfortunately CBS changed the rules on how other "Fan Films" get made after they got started (Due to some group trying to make a film for profit) and they've had to cut it short, but they still do have at least one more film to release before they're done. They're amazingly well done.

Star Trek Continues

I always enjoyed the political machinations of ST over the social ones, no matter the series. I know that ST has been a mix of the two since its inception, but that's been my preference. All of that aside, The Orville "feels" more like ST than Discovery even though it seems to be confused about exactly what kind of show it wants to be.

After watching the last episode of the Orville, the non-Earth feels a lot like our current group think of public opinion on topics. I also liked the little dig at American Idol.

Yeah, I thought the last episode of Orville was great. Very nice satire and spot on political commentary imo.

It was also a good episode of Star Trek Discovery on Sunday. Pretty good time travel episode.

Solid show so far, becoming less comedy and more drama/sci-fi as it moves on. I wonder if Seth used his comedic background as a foot in the door to create a show he really wanted to do.

Was expecting episode to be much more political, but it seemed much more like a referendum on our social media problems than anything else.

Agree, interesting thought on sell it as a comedy and then twist it once he has a following. I am okay with that to be honest. I was commenting about the amount of CGI they are using. You hear a lot about the costs of the CGI for moving and how the industry has changed due to margins, I wonder who is doing their CGI. Freakanomics had an interesting Podcast about the CGI industry leaving LA for other locations and how it has changed to offshore London and Toronto?

Not only am I ok with it, but if true, I'm happy about it. While I think he is a pretty bad actor, I'm happy with the show over all. I hope it continues in this vein.
As for the CGI, while it's not "bleeding edge" like the new Star Trek movies, but I don't think it needs to be either because the stories are pretty good. It almost had a DS9 cgi look/feel to it which is plenty for me.

Ugh. I missed that last. That's what I was concerned about when I read about the concept of the show. Villains are supposedly trump supporter analogues and the protagonists are "flawed" humans which to me means angst, and terrible decisions that no one with an ounce of moral fiber would consider.

This is not Star Trek. Star Trek is humanity's best and brightest, working from a position of exploration and scientific discovery. What was missing .... Space, the final frontier, these are the voyages of the starship ...her ongoing mission to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations and to bodly go where no one has gone before. That is Star Trek.

Did you watch the season? I just finished it!

I found it pretty enjoyable after the first four or so episodes. The pilot had no business being used as the first two episodes, they should have started with Michael being a prisoner picked up by the Discovery and used the pilot as a flashback episode much later in the season.

Yes, was really confused as to what they were doing 3 episodes in. That said, well worth it.

I am not a huge Trekkie, love sci fi stuff!! I thought it was amazing.

Slightly disappointed we did not get more time with the alt Asian as the captian. That would have been fun!

Also, was Lorca the alt Lorca the whole time or was he switched during the show at some point?

The Lorca we saw was always the Mirror Universe Lorca. It explained his weird fascination with Michael (prime universe Lorca had no connection to her) and why his orders seemed very unStarfleet.

So are we to assume, he and Burnum were a thing in the mirrorverse?

Yes. In the Prime Universe Georgiou was Michael’s Captain with Sarek as her adoptive Father and Captain Lorca had nothing to do with any of them. In the Mirror Universe Georgiou was Michael’s adoptive Mother as well as the Empress and Captain Lorca was a right hand man for Georgiou as well as the lover of Michael. Both Michael and Lorca then betrayed Georgiou in the Mirror Universe. Meanwhile in the Mirror Universe, Sarek was the one with no real connection to the others.

Didn’t quite finish it yet.

- production value is high
- plot is okay, I have some quibbles
- morality play interesting with mirrorverse.

Thanks, I could not tell if that is what they were implying. Makes cents, since he was so fascinated with Burnham. There was also part of me that thought... that there was something more special about her.

Now that the season has ended, are the episodes available on demand?

I haven't found a reason to subscribe to All-Access but wouldn't mind paying for a month or two to watch the only show I'm interested in.

Signed up for one week of free access and binge watched the whole thing over a few days. I ended up really liking it, and I thought they did a great job telling a story that had not been told before. It was always known that starfleet and the Klingons had been at war at some point before the original series, and this story filled in that gap.

I’m not sure I completely liked how they wrapped it up, but it was a fun ride to get there with some good twists and turns.

In regards to the ending, I’ll be curious to see how they tell that story.

Other than the revised Klingon design and revised Klingon culture (both of which I hated) and my belief they should have started the series with Burnham already as a prisoner and we learn about her involvement in starting the war as a flashback, I really enjoyed it. Oh and I do think the new theme song is terrible but it doesn’t distract me from liking the show.
