You literally just posted you don't mind discretion unless someone actually uses it.

And in his case, better late than never. Hopefully the dumb piece of crap that fired him has lost his or her job permanently, but the good guy was rehired. And everyone who defended the "policy" should be ashamed of themselves.
I wouldn't make a policy when questioned about it claim there is no discretion allowed so we had to fire him. Then have examples within the company of someone doing the same thing for a stealing or other policy that they did not fire for discretionary purposes.

I am in agreement with you in that Academy made a poor decision to fire him for this.

I doubt the policy said to not touch a customer unless they're stealing a gun. Switch gun for tennis racket or golf club or baseball bat and it's a non story about this guy getting fired for putting his hands on a shoplifter.

Again, this is why zero tolerance policies, much like mandatory minimums are dumb.
