So JHN was out and about last night, with my typical entourage and hangers-on in tow. We travel up College Avenue, en route to the Governor’s Club. We see 5-6 Tally cops, heavily outfitted and striking stern poses, poised across the street from Pot Belly’s. K-9 with them too. Very austere and trying to look intimidating. I am told that TPD has been very active in recent days busting underage drinkers.

Hey, I’m not endorsing underage drinking. But 19-20 year old kids sipping Natty Light strikes me as not worthy of the near-military deployment referenced above.

Funny how the cops did did not move 10-15 blocks North and investigate some of the real crimes going down in Frenchtown. Easier, safer and more profitable to shake down the college kids. But, hey, it’s all about $$ if we can speak honestly. Not a good look, in my view.

Good post, but I think it might be a case of damned if you do/damned if you don't. If, God forbid, there are any accidents involving drunk kids, at least this way TPD can claim they're doing what they can to prevent them.

What I don't get is why you don't see any of these patrols in school zones during the day. I often see people cruising 40+ down Tharpe when the lights are flashing in the afternoon with no cops to be found.

Could not help but wonder if the senseless military show last night was intended to “impress” the parents in town this weekend. Like “don’t worry, we’re on top of this.” If that was the goal, it failed with me. Save the grenade belts and shotgun vests for real hoodlums, not a sea of college kids.

Nothing screams tough guy like a bunch of seal team six wannabes posted up outside of a college bar in tatitical gear and K-9s by their side waiting to bust that college kid with a Natty in hand.

You should’ve told the group of G.I. Joes that the house around corner was passing out candy. Don’t forget to say thank you.

Are you sure they were there for the underage drinkers and not our QB?

Apparently it's Dads Weekend for all the sororities, so maybe they wanted to show Daddy that his precious daughter was being kept safe?

Maybe, who knows? I saw some sorority girls wearing some incredibly salacious (and, in my view, highly inappropriate) get-ups last night. I commented on the hoochie-momma portrayal. One of my tour guides said the costumes are actually very conservative this weekend “because their dads are in town.” LOL. Makes you wonder what they are wearing when the adults are not around. :)

Hmmm, yes it does. Time for a road trip.

I'm glad drinking age was 18 when I was in college.

I had missed the cut off age by 1 year which was an odd way to do imo looking back. A friend of mine who was 19/20 at the time could legally drink while myself at 18/19 could not. Someone knew someone in hogtown, of all places, who had a set up to make fake Kentucky drivers licenses for us all. I used that fake license everywhere for years until the week before my birthday and that blonde haired girl that worked the door at Bullwinkles confiscated it.

Amen. I have always struggled with the idea that a kid at 18 is old enough to sign contracts, vote and go to war, but way too irresponsible to sip a Natty Light. The reality is that booze sometimes makes people of all ages do stupid stuff — see my bidding history at various charitable events as Exhibit A — but I really don’t think a 21 year old is magically all that much more insightful than an 18 year old.

Meanwhile, Florida cannot pass a ban on texting while driving because certain groups raised hell that it would give the cops an unfair chance to “profile.” But the clean-cut 19-20 year old kids — with no legislative or demographic muscle — are fair game for the beer raids. Actually kind of funny what is deemed to be “important.”

Good point.

BTW, when did kids start getting arrested for underage drinking? I recall during my high school days and FSU if the cops showed up you were forced to pour your beer out the ground, the rest of the case was put in the cop car, for their personal use I'm sure, and the party was over. The only reason you went to jail is if you were running your mouth.

I think they generally issue “MIP citations.” The kids pay fine$. But if they catch them with a fake AND legitimate driver’s license, the bigger tool bag cops can then make a felony arrest. Lots of it depends on the cop and the reaction of the kid, of course.

Read the Northwest Florida Daily News during spring break season next year. They have a page on their website dedicated to underage drinking arrest in Okaloosa and Walton counties.

Yep, they were called MIP tickets when I was in college and I got plenty of them.

In Texas they have a group called the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) which would raid fraternity and sorority parties with the express directive to hand out MIP tickets and arrest anyone who might be contributing to a minor.

Actually, it's the way they discourage college spring breakers in favor of families who actually spend money. Panama City can have all of the kids.
I was in PCB all day for work last week. It was a ghost town. We could not believe it. Nobody of any demographic was there spending money.

And the extra money is a fine side-benefit. But you may be right that they want to discourage the big party.

They have the ABT in Fl. I remember one night at Pots there were 2 embarrassingly blatant "undercover" agents trying to bust underage drinking. They were in their 50s and the lady had huge Reba hair, mom jeans and a leather jacket. The guy had acid washed jeans, white NB shoes, hair slicked back into a short mullet, and his shirt unbuttoned showing off his hairy chest and gold necklace. My hippy friend started yelling to everyone pointing them out after they ticketed a few minors and was screaming fascist italy and communist russia. They tried to arrest him for interfering in a police investigation but he hopped the iron fence and ran down the street.

I am amazed at the number of responses that indicate that the poster believes the police should pick and choose which laws to enforce.

Don't bother the underage drinkers, go for the drunk drivers -
Don't bother the drunk drivers if they haven't hit anyone, go after the domestic disturbers -
Don't bother the domestic disturbers, go after the drug dealers -
Don't bother the small-time dealers, go after the drug smugglers -
Don't bother the drug smugglers, go after the domestic fake-prescription grindhouses -
Don't bother the fake prescription mills, go after the manufacturers the wildly overproduce this stuff -

Etc.

How about we charge our law enforcement officers with enforcing all the laws our legislators have seen fit to pass?

Silly. Don’t forget to crack down on the jaywalkers and people who spit on the street. I mean, let’s enforce ALL of the laws — however inconsequential — with the same zeal. Maybe that is why TPD cannot solve major murder cases......

It's been a bad week for the TPD Chief -

An overwhelming majority of Tallahassee police officers who responded to a union survey have no confidence in the leadership of Chief Michael DeLeo and believe issues such as favoritism, lack of promotion opportunities and low morale are rampant.

Post spring break. Pre summer. The last few weeks for the locals until after Labor Day.
Don’t think so. Lot of places did a post Easter spring break. Here is good article on situation. I predict some changes are coming based on what these businesses are going through.

http://www.newsherald.com/article/20160319/NEWS/160318986
“Lately, John Wayne often finds himself walking around Moby Dick’s Island store to kill the boredom because he has had so few customers. He mingles with the cashiers up front who also are not ringing up many customers.
He said last year at this time the gift shop and T-shirt store was packed with spring breakers. But Wayne said his T-shirt and hat airbrush business he and his wife run at the store is down 75 percent from last March because of major decline in spring breakers.
“Look around. There is no one in here. It’s scary,” Wayne said. “I’m making jokes like, ‘I think I saw a tumbleweed.’ Silly stuff.”

Also to topic of thread

“Sparkman said it’s not just the Spring Break laws that have taken its toll; it’s also the heavy presence of law enforcement that has chased away spring breakers.
“It’s a police state,” he said. “When there are blue lights in front of Spinnaker and La Vela every night, that’s not welcoming,” he said. “The sheriff has put the message out on social media that if you come to Panama City and drink on the beach you are going to jail. Not get a citation, but go to jail.”
On a recent Saturday night, patrol cars included not just Panama City Beach police and the Bay County Sheriff’s Office, but smaller cities across the county, the Florida Highway Patrol and even Bonifay. Many sat idle with their emergency lights flashing, including in front of the clubs in more congested areas.”

That is just ridiculous

I wouldn’t be surprised to hear Thrasher encouraging this. After the death and Greek suspension he’s not stopping with the Greeks. He really wants to cut underaged drinking a lot.

They need to be enforcing a lot less. Sorry, but any cop that arrests someone for dui for "buzzed"'driving is a disicabke piece of crap that doesn't deserve to call themselves an American. Same for those busting people for small amounts of drugs. Wrong is wrong and doing wrong is bad. The police state has gotten way out of hand and we'd be better off if every single cop disappeared overnight.

Maybe we should avail ourselves of the democratic process and get laws rescinded in the "proper" fashion?

We don't really want the law enforcement officers picking and choosing the laws to enforce on their own.

we'd be better off if every single cop disappeared overnight.

Sounds like you don't have anyone that needs to be protected...most of us do have some people.

Cops don't protect anyone. They cause more damage than good.

Spinnaker and La Vela...gosh those are some (foggy) memories in those two places...
