and the Mets promote him to AA today. Mark it down, he will be in the majors this year, no matter how much he sucks. I don't know why the Mets don't just make him a mascot.
He'll get a September call up if the Mets are not in contention and they need to sell tickets. If he continues a 1-18 type streak he won't sniff the majors. MLB isn't a place where gimmicks are on display...
Hmmm. I guess I just don’t see that at all. I would think a near 31 year old man-child, who does not deserve to be on the team at all except for his cult like following from his college football days (now 10 years gone by) would be a huge source of irritation for some of those players. Pretty sure this decision was based on jersey and ticket sales, and not how nice and hard working he is...I decided to start calling him
The decision to start him in AA was made last year though. He’s a great motivator with great work ethic. The Mets want him around their younger players. He will likely be moved to AAA around the All Star break.

He has a large and rabid following based on his boyish good looks and his outspoken and I think genuine Christianity. A lot of people are going to be crushed when he comes out of the closet.
I know if I was a player on his team, trying to make it to the bigs or at least win whatever title my league gives I wouldn't appreciate some guy who is that bad getting a roster slot. Remember the rest of his team doesn't have a ton of money from all the other stuff they did prior to being in the minors and the other players are trying to make it. Whether they have a shot or not this is their livelihood currently. To me it would be the same if the coach was playing his son because he can, regardless of how it effects the team.
I’m no Tebow fan but how is he a “man-child”? The dude was wildly successful at building an extremely valuable brand.Hmmm. I guess I just don’t see that at all. I'm not certain how much he had to do with building it rather than simply riding it. If he'd been smart, he'd have stayed in broadcasting and tried to grow a career there where he was becoming better. This baseball thing may be his dream, but it's just ridiculous.I’m no Tebow fan but how is he a “man-child”? The dude was wildly successful at building an extremely valuable brand.
Don’t overlook how poorly he was rated defensively and on the base paths. Those things matter a great deal these days. He was slightly below league average at the plate but way below average everywhere else.Compared to players at that level, he actually isn't that bad. He hits A level pitching decently and believe it or not, doesn't really hurt that team. It may be different for him at AA. He did not do well against MLB pitching though and may not have enough time to figure it out before he starts to decline physically.

I think he enjoys the spotlight more than he is embarrassed by his level of play.I don't begrudge the guy chasing his dream, and it's not all his fault that the media has turned him into a sideshow. But he's becoming a Kardasian of the sports world...famous because of PR and not because of talent or performance on the field. I think he's a genuinely nice human being and a very competitive athlete (he sure kicked our ass more than once), so it seems like all this would become embarrassing to him at some point.
Great article. Thanks for posting that. This writer says it perfectly.
