Has anyone installed this? Seems like with enough solar panels and Power Wall (basically a generator to keep us online if the power grid goes down), seems like a 10 year payment plan will be the same as my current electric bill and then i'll basically have free electric after that. Just wondering if anyone has gone through with this or looked into it?

And what happens when it breaks before 10 years or needs maintenance? Waste of money? You doing this in Florida? Hurricanes?

They actually are rated higher than shingles for wind resistance. Not sure how they are attached to the deck though. Unless you're staying in your home for 20 years, the cost doesn't make sense right now.

I have several friends who have gone this route, and they are very pleased with the results. We are hoping to put a Tesla roof on our cabin in a few years, as well.

I've been thinking about solar panels and want to experiment some but given the recent hurricanes and tornadoes my first investment priority is retrofiting a safe room in our house.

The Tesla sales rep said they are under warranty for 20 years and if a hurricane blows them off my roof, Tesla comes out and puts them back on as part of the warranty. I will continue to do my research and make sure the warranty addresses stuff like that in writing.

To the poster that said, 20 year or its not worth it: If I pay them off in 10 years with the same average monthly cost of my electric bill, I would say the real number is 10 years. My house is new construction in South Tampa so the roof will last the same 20 years that the solar panels are covered under warranty for and the only way i'm leaving this house is if a hurricane destroys it/leaves it under water. I will downsize in my 50s to help get me to retirement but don't plan to move before that (22+ years away).

Attaching anything to a roof just makes me nervous - I'm sure they've got it worked out but it still seems crazy to put extra holes in a surface designed to keep the rain away!

What are you doing for your safe room?

I just installed a Generac at my house, 22 kw. Was looking into Tesla, but way too expensive, and im not willing to trust my family's potential safety to such a new technology at this time.

you mind sharing what you paid for the Generac?

And since I'm grilling you what was the cost of the electrician to install?
I would have to look it up, but around $1k? Also need to have gas company out to hook up tanks, that cost me about $800. Then again, I live in Westchester County, NY and everything here is absurdly expensive.

I would completely flip my shiz if that happened to me. I've been doing the portable generator for ten years, and I paid a premium to never have to do it again.

You know what brand generator he has?

It was a Generac by a local well respected company. I just went back and looked at his Facebook page back in October. Its probably more to do with the company than the Generac itself. Its a motor that doesnt get used much, what can go wrong? Everything. If you have a generator whole house or crank, its probably wise to turn it on/crank it every couple of weeks starting in late June. The company should have some folks ready to work regardless of their situation with storm, its why they have a business. My son in law is a cop, he is expected to work even if his house is blown away

The motor should cycle once a week automatically to make sure everything is functioning correctly, at least mine does.

I dont know anything about them but always thought i would buy one one day. I have 2 4,000 watt generators. I keep everything going (even Directtv) but the AC which means I sleep in my big mosquito tent on a lounge chair by the pool at night.

Yes even the portable handles a lot. I just got tired of going out in snow storms, plus with a young kid, I was worried that we could lose power when I'm not home, wife has zero chance of starting that thing.

I do too I was at his house during the storm and the system quit 45 minutes after the power went out.

I had a Generac too, it exercised itself once a week and died outside the warranty. I was also ticked off pretty well when I was hauling gas cans to my portable post Hurricane.

I wonder if a PTO-driven generator may not be the safest bet. Plus it gives me an excuse to but a tractor!

Ive got two 120 gallon propane tanks, so I should be able to last quite a few days if my wife does try to live like a kardashian

Got one of these (B&S 5000W) a few days after Hurricane Charley...will power a small wall unit AC so we can sleep in the cool as well as the refrigerators and a small freezer. Been worth its weight in gold so far. It'd sure be nice to have one of those whole house generators but I think I would still keep this one around.
