This is one of the first years that I don’t have to cook, I don’t have to go out. I’m dog sitting.

I saw a funny meme on FB with an American offering a colonist a turkey. While that is the Massachusetts lore of 1620, many forget the Virginia stories. Jamestown was 1607, Henrico, (Richmond), 1610.

Anyway, there are many diaries and writings about what the natives taught the colonists about food, and there were years when they all weren’t fighting that food was shared.

Out of the five main rivers in Virginia, four are tidal rivers. For many years, crab and oysters were staples in the south. The north had their staples of lobster, oysters, clams, etc. Not to mention the riches of the Chesapeake.

Now they’re all delicacies.

At any rate, I’m having lobster, stone crab claws and making ceviche with octopus, squid, clams and shrimp. There will also be corn.

I’ve never shucked an oyster, so no oysters.

Then I’ll make bisque, making stock from the shells.
