It’s pretty simple really, there are 2 options here, but let’s look at the background first. When Briles extended with Houston at the beginning of December, Clements got a 3 year, $1.2 million extension. FSU just had to pay Houston $800k for Briles’ buyout. It was very apparent that FSU was going to have to pay for Clement’s buyout as well, but then Houston decided to fire Applewhite, leading to FSU holding all of the leverage. Now here are the two options.

Option 1 (Advantageous for FSU): Houston fires Clements, leading to Houston being on the hook for the $1.2 million that is owed to Clements, FSU can then get Clements at a discounted rate and not pay a buyout.

Option 2 (Advantageous for Houston): FSU hires Clements from Houston, which requires FSU to pay some sort of a buyout and pay the full amount of Clements’ salary.

This is where the standstill currently lies, and it comes down to which HC finds it more important to finish their staff in a timely manner. Taggart doesn’t see the need to rush to hire Clements because all the o-line recruits know he is coming and the coaches can’t coach the kids right now. He is also waiting on the NCAA decision to finalize his staff.

FSU knows that Holgorsen is going to want to finish his staff up and so they aren’t playing hardball.

Everyone wants to complain about FSU not hiring him and says the administration is cheap, can’t close a deal, etc., however this could potentially save FSU a couple million dollars, and would nullify the buyout that was just paid to Houston for Briles. Be patient Warchanters, be patient. (I’m talking to my irrational self as well)
