Thirty years ago this month.....

Congrats. I tried them both and found them to be too disgusting to try a second time. If you were doing it enough to be addicted, why did you quit?

It was gross, cost me money, chicks didn't find it attractive. I'm sure I could think up more reasons. Those come to mind first.

And I wouldn't say I was addicted, I guess I wanted to be cool like the rest of the jocks in high school.

February 12, 2005 was my last day dipping. Wish I could say I didn't miss it like you do.

I miss it all the time still. That stuff is POWERFUL!

Sorry if I sound like a d-bag, OP...but if you don't miss dipping at all, why do you remember exactly when you quit and share it with others? Incidentally, I'm a former dipper myself and live under the same roof with someone who does it...No urge at all to restart the habit.

Well, yes, you do sound a bit like a bag filled with vinegar and water. I remember it because I have a very good memory and I point it out because it was a nasty habit that I'm glad I kicked a long time ago. I saw friends of mine who were a little older than me who started to develop mouth sores and I figured that I didn't want to go down that route.

Does that meet your satisfaction, NoleLizards?

Call me "Massengill" for short. I heard that 1/3 of people who keep dipping get cancer...That's crazy. Good thing we quit.

I remember the last cigarette I ever had. I never smoked a ton, but the last time I smoked was the night we went to the hospital when my daughter was born. I was determined that she'd never see me do it, so she'd never think it was all right to do. I figured my parents smoked around me, so picking it up in college wasn't a big deal - it would be a big deal to her if she's never seen it as acceptable.

I still dip sometimes - like late at night if I'm up watching TV and everyone else is asleep, or when I'm out golfing, or in the car for really long periods by myself, or whatever. I like it, but I don't really care if I don't do it.

That's cool that your wife dips.

I quit 20 years ago and still miss it from time to time. My daughter began to crawl and pulled herself up to stand against the coffee table and when she reached for the soda can I was spitting in I swiped it away from her reach, took my dip out and was done for good.

If I had only been smoking 3-4 a day I probably would never have quit. But, I was smoking 2 packs a day. Cold turkey 1/3/91.
Glad I did it. Do you consider yourself addicted?
For sure I am. Biggest obstacle is my wife is a closet smoker too so I always end up falling off the wagon.

There are times I miss smoking. But not enough to ever start back.

Funny story about me dipping.

When I was 16 I worked as a lifeguard at Shipwreck Island Waterpark in PCB.

It was the end of the day and we were about to close. The park was just about empty. I was working the "Raging Rapids". I was standing in about 6 inches of water 2/3 the way up the hill. I had 3 buddies working at stations downstream; we could all see One another up and down the hill. Our job was to push people along as they came by our station.

Again, park was just about empty, no one was in line to go.

My manager walks by and was putting a big dip in, I told him to give me some of that action; he laughs and gives me a big ole pinch of his snuff.

I pop it in like a champ, all my buddies are laughing, I start to feel really buzzed. I start to laugh and then decided to take a leak. I hike up one side of shorts and pull my pecker out and start peeing in the water going back and forth side to side like it was a water hose.

My buddies are laughing, I'm laughing; just being a typical teenager having fun.

Then from nowhere a girl on a tube comes drifting down from around the corner and passed right in front of me, I had no clue she was coming.

I was in mid stream, I peed directly across her chest. I could hear the pee make a swoosh sound as it hit her chest. She screamed the entire way down, "the lifeguard peed on me, the lifeguard peed on me".

I panicked, didn't even clock out. Hopped the fence and went home expecting to be fired. My manager talked to her, calmed her down and thankfully it never got back to upper management. My job was saved thank goodness. I didn't get paid jack, but it was one of the better summers of my life.

So anyhow... that's my story about my first and last dip.

Video to give perspective of ride, I believe I was standing at the 1:23 mark, there or the next station.

I still can't stop smoking 3-4 cigarettes a day.
Gotta just quit. I smoked a pack, sometimes two, a day for 20 years. Cut down to about 4-5 a day and finally decided to just stop. It's tough but you gotta convince yourself it's something you used to do. Anymore cig smokes makes me ill to be around...

I was a two pack a day guy. One at work and another at the bar after work. Wife smoked too. She met me at the bar after work one Friday 28 years ago and told me she was quitting. In my buzzed state, I agreed to quit with her. Next morning all the cigs, lighters, ashtrays, etc. were gone. Took me a while to figure out what was going on but remembered my promise. Quit cold turkey.

Sort of in the line of how NDRuss quit, I quit smoking while wife was pregnant. Wife had factor V blood clotting issue and gestational diabetes while pregnant and I figured if she handle getting a shot every night and going through all the health issues while pregnant, I could handle quitting and like Russ I wasn't excited about the thought of being a smoker around my children. I had tried several times before and failed but this was the incentive that made quitting permanent. Daughter is 16 now and smoking is but a faint memory.

I dipped on and off for a few months in 6th grade. Not hardcore but enough to realize it was not a good habit to get into. It was also kind of difficult sourcing the stuff at 12 years old.

Never smoked and glad I didn't. Happy for all you who have been able to kick the habit.

I dipped from 11 - 30. Stopped cold turkey when my dentist, who is a friend of mine, told me I had per-cancerous polyps in my gum line. That was 11.5 years ago, since then I've probably put in 3-4 pinches while drunk and bought 3 pouches of Red Man for long drives.
