LATE REPORT
Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher said his team is continuing its development in regards to consistency throughout various positions.
Fisher described Tuesday's session as a "good, hard practice." He noted there are areas where the team can improve but the Seminoles are getting there.
More could be known about linebacker Terrance Smith's status later in the week. Fisher said Smith was no longer wearing a protective boot. He also said offensive lineman Kareem Are is day-to-day and could not say what the line would look like upon Are's return. Are missed FSU's game against Miami and was replaced by Chad Mavety.
He did say younger players like true freshmen Sh'Mar Kilby-Lane and Tarvarus McFadden were starting to find a niche within the team. There's no projected timetable of when they would figure into the respective rotation at their position.
Many of the questions Fisher faced were routine. The conversation then shifted to the current landscape of college football. He was asked about the resignation of former Florida and now former South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier and the dismissal of Southern California's Steve Sarkisian and Randy Edsall's removal from Maryland.
"It's our world. That's the world of sports today," Fisher said. "With Twitter and the pressures...everything magnified 10-fold, a 100-fold, a 1,000-fold than it used to be years ago. It's not the same world with coaching, playing...I say that all the time and no one understands it. That's the facts. It's what you live with every day and it isn't going to change."
He continued by saying coaches must know be aware of all that's in play beyond what goes on the field. He said coaches must now be mindful of the business aspect of college football.
"How much coverage we get? How much are ya'll here? How much are ya'll writing something every day?" Fisher said rhetorically. "You used to write one article a week or two articles a week on a newspaper when it got out. Now? You guys are putting things out. Tweeting...the information, social media. It's the world we live in. Now ESPN, now TV, now money and the contracts. I mean...that's just what happens. It's a big business."
Fisher also expressed his thoughts on Spurrier saying the longtime SEC coach was a good man and he enjoyed the time he spent with Spurrier and his wife.
"One of the great coaches of all time," he said. "A great guy too. I like Steve. Times I've been around him...college football lost a great guy."
EARLY REPORT
FSU's back at it today on a pretty warm Tuesday afternoon. The 'Noles are going in full pads as is usual on Tuesday -- the heaviest hitting day of the week.
With Jackie Sherrill speaking at the Tallahassee Quarterback Club tonight, the former Mississippi State/Texas A&M (and other schools) head coach checked out practice.
From an injury standpoint, RB Dalvin Cook (hamstring), LB Terrance Smith (ankle) and DB Nate Andrews (knee) were doing rehab assignments at the start of practice. Andrews was in full pads, so he might have joined the practice as it continued. LB Sh'Mar Kilby-Lane also was with the guys who were rehabbing, OL Kareem Are was out, and TE Jeremy Kerr was not participating, from what I saw.
One thing that DEs coach Brad Lawing worked on Tuesday was having his players make tackles in space. He reminded FSU's pass rushers that Louisville's Lamar Jackson is a very mobile quarterback and difficult to bring down.
It looks like the OL has found a stable five for now, at least as long as Are is out. The starters again were Johnson, Mavety, Hoefeld, Bell and Kelly.
That's about it for now. Will have more after Jimbo speaks around 6 p.m.
