Appreciate any feedback. Considering a trip to the Yucatan. Thank you!

There was also a gas leak at a nearby hotel that killed tourists.

I absolutely loved Tulum and have no bad things to say about either of the two times I visited other than lots of cheap tourist trap knickknacks being sold. But the beach underneath the cliff is beautiful, the reefs are gorgeous and the ruins are very well preserved (unlike those in other parts of Mexico or especially Belize).

I would say that I highly recommend the restaurant Frosty’s inside Tulum but Yelp is reporting it is permanently closed. Its website is still functioning so I don’t know if that’s true. If it IS still up and running you should definitely go, it’s got absolutely amazing fresh local fish tacos and the margaritas are poured with a heavy hand on the tequila and fresh lime juice.

We visited the ruins 9 years ago and loved it. We were on a cruise so we didn't get to see the surrounding area. We just bused to the ruins and then back to the ship. I would definitely recommend visiting if you get a chance.

Wouldn't go to Mexico unless I went with a full armament. While I am sure there are places that are relatively safe the country is lawless. If there were some things that you just could't see anywhere else in the world then maybe it is worth it; but there are plenty of other places to see in the world without that level of risk.
From the State Department
The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in many areas of Mexico as U.S. government employees are prohibited from travel to these areas.
U.S. government employees are prohibited from intercity travel after dark in many areas of Mexico. U.S. government employees are also not permitted to drive from the U.S.-Mexico border to or from the interior parts of Mexico with the exception of daytime travel on Highway 15 between Nogales and Hermosillo.

Now to offset the racist handwringing, Quintana Roo which includes Tulum had about 250 murders in a one year period. Chicago which almost exactly double the size had 650 killed last year and 771 the year before. Now Quintana Roo does have double the murders of the year before thanks to the uptick in gang violence and Chicago had a 16% reduction thanks to an additional 1000 LEOs employee last year over 2016. But even still Quintana Roo would only equal 500 murders to Chicago’s 650 if you made their population equivalent.

New Orleans had 157 murders and a population only the half the size of Quintana Roo so it would be at 314 murders if the size of Quintana Roo or 628 if the size of Chicago.

The morale of this story is that as long as you’re not messing around with drug dealers and prostitutes or otherwise stupidly go to the rougher sides of town you’ll be fine. I’ve been to Chicago and especially New Orleans countless times as a tourist (whether business or pleasure) and I’ve had zero issues.

I learn something new everyday. I never knew Town & Country Magazine, Forbes, & The U.S. State Department were "racist".

The agenda to make this a news priority stems from Washington. Can’t build a wall and if there’s nothing to protect us from. Can’t punish Mexico for their president verbally contradicting Trump except through tourism really.

A non racist story/agenda would say the state surrounding the Mayan pyramids is now ALMOST as dangerous as Chicago, Miami and New Orleans. Not “ZOMG American tourists are murdered on the steps of pyramids on on the beaches and reefs of Mexico.”

So, just curious are the Australian & Canadian governments racist too?

From the Forbes article linked above:

The Australian government also expresses concern about the safety of areas frequented by vacationers.

"Violent crime, including murder, armed robbery, sexual assault and kidnapping, occurs in Mexico, including in popular tourist destinations and beach resorts, and the risks increase after dark," the Australian government says. "Petty crime, such as pickpocketing and bag snatching, is prevalent in tourist destinations, airports, hotels, bus stations and on public transport."

The Australian government says there have been reports of sexual assault, extortion and robbery "being committed by individuals presenting themselves as police officers, sometimes driving automobiles resembling police vehicles."

Kidnappings are common, and there have been allegations of complicity by police officers," the Australian government says. "Be cautious and discreet about discussing your financial or business affairs."

The Canadian government says hotel employees, taxi drivers and security personnel "at popular tourist destinations" have physically or sexually assaulted foreigners. Be wary of beverages and snacks offered by taxi drivers, strangers or new acquaintances, because they "may contain drugs that could put you at risk of sexual assault and robbery," the government advises.

You wanna know how I know you’ve been to Australia? The fact that you even suggest Oz isn’t racist. It makes Mississippi look like Connecticut. Aborigines and Pacific Islanders couldn’t even vote there until 1962. The first Aborigine wasn’t voted into their version of Congress until 2010. Yes that’s right, eight years ago was the FIRST Aborigine who was elected to their equivalent of Congress. Mississippi elected its first black Senator in 1870 or ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY YEARS before Australia.

So I definitely LOLed at your argument for including Australia as a nonracist place. I (as a white male) enjoyed visiting Australia but the AVERAGE Ozzie would fit in the worst Alt Right Rally in Mericuh.

Canada on the other hand is pretty racist, it’s just more polite about it. But they did NOT issue a warning about Quintana Roo just forwarded the US information as a generic alert and did issue a specific warning for a week or two about using ferry service as there had been an explosion on one to kill a gang leader and there were warnings about possible other attacks. That’s since been rescinded.

Here’s the Mexican states that Canada actually provided warnings about (and their murder rates do exceed America’s unlike Quintana Roo)

Also here’s the travel warnings about Mericuh courtesy of the Canadians.

“The possession of firearms and the frequency of violent crime are generally more prevalent in the United States than in Canada.

Within large metropolitan areas, violent crime more commonly occurs in economically disadvantaged neighbourhoods, particularly from dusk to dawn, and often involves intoxication. Incidents of violent crime are mainly perpetrated by gangs or members of organized crime.”

“Canadians living in holiday homes have been the victims of break-ins and burglary. Whether you are staying in either private or commercial accommodations, make sure you lock windows and doors securely at night and when you are away.”

Be on alert for robbery ploys targeting visitors. Drivers have reported being targeted by criminals on highways while leaving airports or other tourist destinations. Criminals signal tourists driving on the highway to stop due to an issue with their vehicle. They then wait for the driver to pull over or exit the car before grabbing exposed valuables. Criminals may also throw items at the windshield, obscuring the view of the road and forcing the driver to pull over.

Avoid pulling over on the side of the road. Put on your hazard lights and slowly drive to a gas station, police station or other safe and populated area.”

There is a threat of terrorism. Terrorist attacks could occur at any time and targets could include:

  • government buildings, including schools
  • places of worship
  • airports and other transportation hubs and networks
  • public areas such as tourist attractions, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, shopping centres, markets, hotels and other sites frequented by foreigners
Always be aware of your surroundings when in public places, particularly in large crowds. Monitor the media to keep informed of potential risks to safety and security.”

“Demonstrations occur and have the potential to suddenly turn violent. Avoid all demonstrations and large gatherings, follow the instructions of local authorities and monitor local media.”

ZOMG!!! Avoid the US at all costs!!!!

Once again Tribe knows all. Of course why would he be afraid he benches 425lbs, is a MMA expert, the USMC wanted him, he knows multiple insider CIA folks and this is just the start. I do love the racists throw in; wouldn't be tribe without trying to get a thread locked. Maybe that is his plan, when he knows nothing or can't wow people with his tribisms he just throws out BS and gets a thread locked. Waiting on the 6 paragraph response that says nothing, isn't verifiable and trys to make tribe look like he knows what he is talking about.

Show me one thing I said that is incorrect. I’ll wait. Keep bloviating (and looking up what bloviating is).

But also I enjoy your tactic of making stuff that I said while claiming I made stuff up. A common tactic of your one and only true love.

Let’s see “can bench 425”, nope I said I did quite some time ago which is half off the record.

“Is an MMA expert”, nope I WROTE for MMA blogs I didn’t say I did it. I never made it past brown belt in Tae Kwon Do (albeit that was because the instructor moved 100 miles away and I had to start over again in other martial arts).

“The USMC wanted him” I’m not even sure what you’re referring to. The fact I almost went into JAG at two separate occasions but ultimately didn’t or when I was in HS the recruiters for everyone was desperate to get me (and every other warm body in) because I was stupid enough to take the ASVAB before leaving HS. All of that is hardly worth mentioning, the JAG will take probably half the law students out there and the Armed Services will probably 80% of any group of 18yos. I dare you to say I claimed at any point to have actually been in the military or even ROTC (the closest I came was to joining the ROTC’s Rocketry club in HS for a year as I had that as a hobby anyways, then I smartly switched to French Club as I was only one of two dudes in a group of 40+ girls).

“He knows Multiple Insider CIA”....ok lets figure this one out. I went to William and Mary for law school which averaged (I would say averages but I didn’t pay attention to after I left so we’ll just say before and during when I was there) 8-10 students placed in the CIA or other intelligence service. There was only 140 of us in each class. So the odds of me being friends with some of those are pretty high. Also I interned at the Department of State Office of International Affairs and was the personal slave in either 2000 or 2001...er intern.....of Mitchell Reiss https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitchell_Reiss, both of which are not directly CIA but CIA adjacent. So yeah odds are pretty good that I know a guy (or gal). Nowhere near the amount or level of interaction as Ponch who could probably have 50 of them at his house this weekend. And I never said they gave me any secret information, in fact they don’t. Not one. I enjoy staying relatively informed about the subjects but it doesn’t come from people I personally know just publicly available information and a general knowledge of how this works. But that’s because I was a “fellow” in International Law at Bill & Mary and my grand uncle was a station chief in China in the OSS during WW2. Not because I grill friends for secret info, I wouldn’t trust them anyways nor would I want to have it and be accused of leaking something. As far as why I didn’t pursue it outside of being a “fellow” and doing two internships that were “adjacent”, I had a friend who was a year ahead and while he didn’t give away secrets or any such thing (and btw most CIA personnel are public it’s a tiny percentage that are hanging out with Ponch in secret and I believe I know zero of those) but he described in generalities what he was doing and it was boring as %*^+^. I can stomach low pay, I can’t stomach staring at tungsten supply memos on a daily basis.

So a nice mix of lies and truths in what you said about me. You should put in for a PR job with your buddy!

Tribe I don't have to disprove your bs you do quite a good job of making it clear you are full of it. At least your entertaining though; much like the class clown. Please continue with your 6 paragraphs to explain stuff though. I do like this though I went to William and Mary for law school which averaged (I would say averages but I didn’t pay attention to after I left so we’ll just say before and during when I was there) 8-10 students placed in the CIA or other intelligence service. There was only 140 of us in each class. So the odds of me being friends with some of those are pretty high. Not because I grill friends for secret info, I wouldn’t trust them anyways nor would I want to have it and be accused of leaking something. Then bringing other people into the debate very nice and well done. Bottom line you spew more BS than a meth head; but you do have mad google skills. Waiting for the next 6 paragraphs of explanation; maybe you should use your google skills to look up how people can tell other people are lying; hint hint taking way to much time to explain things and bringing in non-relevant info. For the record I don't really care that you are the full of crap guy in the LR, it is entertaining and every group needs a clown, just try and do better that is all I am asking; oh and maybe relax on the alt right garbage or other political bs that you google. I don't know maybe try a different search engine?

I'll just say that fears about safety in Mexico are overblown, if not hypocritical, considering our own woes with mass killings.

You'll be fine. Go enjoy the beach.

Ranger v. Tribe

Not much of a fight one guy is habitual liar and the other (me) while I post some dumb things I have done, I am honest. You may decide to give me crap and I may deserve it; but you will never see a post where I tried to inflate something I did or didn't do. I am sure Tribe is a decent fellow, successful in many areas but for some reason he needs to try and be the center of the world in everything. Kind of sad if you ask me. Oh well I have a week at home and can do my job from here and multi-task. Should be a fun week.

You once again and for the 4000th time are wrong. I really don’t care what people on an anonymous message board think. Those that are pleasant know who I am, see what I do, know my cv etc... So anonymous message board members can become friends and those I care about. Those like yourself with severe anger management issues to the point where I hope a couple of them mention your name to the LEOs if I get gunned down. I would never trust you with my personal details. People like you have to either take what I say at face value or just deny it like you do to feel better about yourself. Since you also deny facts about literally every single thing that fly in the face of your opinion, I’m not shocked you choose to disbelieve everything.

I’d like to suggest you simply set me on ignore. You don’t like facts that fly in the face of your beliefs. I’ve got a couple people I’m ignoring and it works great. I would ignore you but honestly I don’t trust you enough NOT to see what crazy %*%* you are saying at least for the next couple of months.

I'm not a mod but how about you guys take a deep breath, exhale, and stick to a spirited argument about overhyped safety concerns in Mexico and leave the personal grudges in the past.

A little off topic, but I was treated to the ultimate skeeter repellant last summer. Played a golf course near Auburn that literally meanders through what appears to be a swamp; hot and very humid that day. Caddies gave us dryer fabric softener sheets to stick in our shirt collars, and voila. Nary a problem.

All for it except the locker room clown can't help himself. He has to throw in various alt right, racists garbage into subjects in order to prove his worth; instead of just contributing facts whether real or google. No worries though I am back at it 12-16 hours a day on Monday so Tribie can get back to pretending he knows what he comments on.

I came here for the Mexico talk and watched a slap fest. Exactly what I would expect in Mexico (or OBT), so well done fellas.

Now imagine I also brag about chasing some guy down in my car with them to the dump because they gave me “a look”, that I bragged about almost getting into a violent physical alteration because someone in a bar accidentally brushed into me and bragged about my gun collection all things you’ve done.

You’re not properly hinged. I would have suggested nonpublicly that you get some trauma-informed care to deal with your anger management issues but the stalking is getting a little out of hand when I just said there’s a simple solution of putting me on ignore and leaving me alone. Pull yourself together.

there are some really dangerous areas of Mexico. Most of them are not places gringos would normally venture. The touristy places are generally safe, but for opportunist that look for the drunk gringo to rob - and unfortunately those can turn out violent. Now I attribute some of the horrible stories to tourist out looking for stuff they shouldn’t be looking for. There is a certain level of potential danger when you go looking for the Bolivian marching powder and prostitutes. I know a great story about a group of marines and special forces that got robbed naked when they were out in Lima sniffing for the powder and culo.
