Norvell is here.
Said he's excited for the week. Miami is one of greatest rivalries in all of college football. Says there is a lot of excitement in the program.
"We were not efficient at all there offensively in the first half. For a variety of reasons. Missed passes, one series we had back to back bad snaps ... just could never really get anything going. Thought our guys responded well in the second half, just were not able to be consistent. Really struggled to get run game started. They did a nice job of keeping us bottled up."
Says defensively, the biggest problems were big plays and third downs.
Said they had guys in position to get the ball down, and they just have to make sure they're finishing those plays and making space tackles when they need to.
Says they've seen some real steps from the defense, limiting big plays, tackling better in space, third down defense has been much improved. They've been playing better with their eyes. "I was really pleased with our guys from the work they've put in, the guys who had a chance to be available."
Says intensity last night in practice was strong.
On Jordan Travis: "We're going to see how the week progresses. He was in pretty tough shape last week. It carried over to yesterday, so we'll see how he progresses throughout the week."
Says he's very excited about being part of the Miami game, didn't really get to experience it last year.
"It's been a long time coming."
Says a lot of fourth down attempts are "feel."
Says quarterback for Miami, Van Dyke, can really extend plays and is looking to take shots downfield. "You see the arm strength, the way he's able to locate the ball down the field, he's really stretched defenses. He can stretch the field vertically." Says getting Knighton back has been huge for that offense, too. "They've got Rambo at receiver, he's one of the best receivers in the league, and he's playing at a high level."
Says it was great to see Helton make that play on the TD catch. "That was a heck of a play there for that moment. It showed unbelievable relentless effort that showed up throughout the course of that play ... That is Keyshawn. He gives everything he has on each opportunity."
Says NC State did a good job of taking edge defenders and adding them into the run game defense. "They did a nice job of jamming things up. We made a couple of adjustments and were able to create some space in there. .... They did a nice job and we could continue to do a better job of trying to help put our guys in practice."
On Chubba: "He came in on Tuesday, informing us where he got to, he and his family decision to leave. It was a shock really to a lot of people around the program. At the end of the day, it's each young man's decision. ... He was actually one of the guys out on Monday with what was going on. I wish him all the best."
Said the portal is making things really different, for every coach in the country. He wishes the players the best, but he's honest with someone who comes and talks about playing time. He's not going to lie, or paint a picture that isn't true.
But he says when a player comes and talks to him about his future, he tries to be completely honest. But he doesn't know what his roster will even look like next year.
Says it's hard to know how many spots they have available right now, so it's hard to know how hard to hit the portal.
"It's a new age in college football and you just have to adjust and adapt to it."
Says they do a heavy self scout and make sure they're not giving away tendencies in all three phases.
On Rodemaker: He's definitely getting more work with the first and second group. This last week he got a little bit of both. ... It would limit the time he would go down (to scout team). ... I like the positive growth I'm seeing from Tate." Says those Sunday night practices were good for Tate and Chubba. "It's good to see the progress he's making ... he had a couple of rough spots last week, he was doing everything in his power to be available. He and McKenzie both."
That's a wrap on Norvell.
Kenny Dillingham is up next.
Says first half "we were struggling to move them." Says they took gigantic splits in the second half. It was a huge change. ... "Just to try to create some space."
"Obviously that lasts a few drives, but eventually they'll start twisting and splitting, that's why it didn't last the whole game."
On Travis's availability for NCSU: "They did exactly what they thought we would do on every single snap." Says only one play of the game, where they didn't know exactly what was going on.
Says he has to do a better job of putting his players in one-on-one positions, and to win those battles.
Says he thinks Miami defense has the most talent of anyone they've played on defense, not named Clemson.
"Some of those DBs are incredible with the ball in the air."
Says other than two runs, Miami had a dominant performance against GT. "Their defense played phenomenal last week. ... when they're there, they're disruptive .... great challenge for our guys to go win one on one."
Says having Travis back there challenges defenses. "The full variety that Jordan brings you makes you a much more difficult offense to defend, because of the plus ability to run."
On Chubba: You just tell them the truth and you're honest with them ... whether they like it or not ... and they have to make the best decision for them. ... coaches leave all the time, so I don't think the transfer portal is a bad thing. ... I know for a fact he got drastically better during his time here, and I know he knows he got drastically better in his time here. ... And I wish him nothing but the best."
Says Clemson and NC State have drastically different styles to stop the running game. "But they're both good in their own right."
"At the end of the day, it all comes down to we got our guys to execute those things better .... maybe get the ball a half second earlier ... and how to create a rub. .... we've got to do a better job of teaching, explaining, coaching."
Keeps coming back to having to do a better job of explaining/coaching during the week.
On Tate: "I would feel comfortable putting him in a game right now. ... He wasn't ready to go in there (last year) ... that's a guy who continually has gotten better in his time here. He understands what we're trying to accomplish. ... Has to continue to work on his drops ... he's actually a plus athlete, you saw him do his little summersault flip this summer," and he says it's really hard for good athletes to remember that there are better athletes out there on the field with him. And he has to get better about throwing the ball away or throwing a check down. "That's a good play and he's starting to get to that point."
That's a wrap on Kenny.
Adam Fuller is up next.
Says Keir Thomas has been getting a lot of reps in the middle on passing downs, and he was able to get that sack in the second half because of great anticipation.
On how the defense played: "Not good enough to win." Says they go through the game with the players, "we're not afraid to show any clips, good or bad, because the game rides on emotion ... and call out what was good and call out what wasn't good, and there were obviously plays that created 28 points ... whether it was a missed tackle or leverage, whatever it was ... there have been a lot of copycat plays." Says he credits the team for figuring out how team's are attacking him.
On tackling: "Tackling is sometimes it's physical, sometimes it's want-to, technique, sometimes it's talent. ... what we coach is effort and intent ... and it's our job to put out there the guys to make the plays. ... some of those missed tackles showed up and they went for big plays, for us to win that game, it can't happen. ... Trying to get it fixed every single moment. ... I thought backside of the plays, our guys hustled. ... Sometimes with a DB, missing a tackle is because of big space."
On Miami offense: "He's playing with a lot of confidence. ... he feels really confident in what they're asking him to do. They keep it pretty clean for him. ... he's got a really live arm, he's big, he's got a back that can create some plays ... and they've been winning on the outside, i think it's no secret he's given them a big spark for them."
On Rambo: "He's an outside receiver. ... For the most part you know where he's going to line up." But he has a great relationship with the QB.
Says there wasn't necessarily missed communication on the first TD, but there were two players that didn't do their job well. And at the very least, even after the completion, you've got to get the ball on the ground.
Says Kevin Knowles will play CB at some point in his career, but that he likes what he's doing at nickel.
Says Miami won't line up and throw the ball 70 times, and he thinks Knighton is probably the most explosive player. "You've got to make sure you're paying attention to the back, because he can definitely take it from anywhere on the football field." Says its their job to realize when the run could be coming. "We've got to keep digging into the numbers and making sure we give our players the accurate information."
That's a wrap on Fuller.
John Papuchis is up next.
Says the last punt return was how they coach it up. They tell him to put heels on the 7. And don't catch anything after that. And they were hoping, with the ball bouncing at the 4, that it would roll into the end zone.
On the onside kick: "Coach is aggressive. He wants to take advantages of those opportunities ... and Parker's execution was really good. Gutsy for him to go get it ... we needed a spark at that minute."
On Keir Thomas: "I can tell ... he's locked in and ready to go. He played well on Saturday ... to play well in these types of games is about preparation and then controlling your emotions in the moment. ... I know he's fired up, I know he's ready, and I'm excited for him to have the opportunity to play in the game."
"I think you've seen growth overall from the defense as the year has gone on ... i think when you have that type of consistency within personnel groupings, and we do a lot of meetings together, the more comfortable you get with each other .... more comfortability to talk. So, there is communication."
On young DEs getting more reps and urgency: "You keep pushing those guys to develop regardless of how many games you've got left. ... you do see a lot of guys growing and getting more expansive roles ... our mindset from a coaching standpoint doesn't change. .... next year and who's going to play next year, we're worry about that (later).
On Grothaus injury: He got rolled up pretty good on the onside kick, and papuchis asked if he was good to kick, and he said yeah. when he hit the next kickoff he said he had to get checked out. Obviously, in hindsight you wished you had known that before you put him out there ..... Says he feels comfortable if Fitzgerald has to come in and kick.
On Mastromanno: "Alex had a very solid game for us. .. Couple of times we asked him to kind of flip the field over ... I thought he did a really good job ... says the ultimate weapon is he can punt with each other foot, which makes him hard to block because he can roll away from the pressure.
And that's a wrap on Papuchis.
And a wrap on the day.
Thanks for being here!
