Damn I miss Ian Darke doing USMNT games. Great atmospheres at Red Bull arena in NJ.

USMNT needs to win this

Pulisic has lost the ball so many times tonight. I wasn't expecting this given all I've heard from him in Germany.... maybe an off night. Not good for US tonight. We didn't need this. 10 min to go

Must root for Mexico tonight. Must beat Honduras next week. Then that home match against Panama next month will probably decide third place.

Looked like crap tonight, but all is not lost yet. Lose to Honduras then we are very much is danger of having to go to a playoff or not even qualify.

The USMNT looked like they studied the Arsenal game from this past weekend and tried to implement the same strategy. They looked absolutely terrible and were lucky to lose only 2-0.

Granted there should have been a penalty given when Altidore was taken down in the first half, and that could have changed things, but the defense looked absent. They better correct things by Tuesday or they will be watching Russia from home next summer.

I love soccer but I find it hard to root for the USMNT. Anyone else feel that way?

Watched the game tonight, very lackluster. So what do we need to qualify from here on out?

Amazing that in a tiny country like Costa Rica can filed a team that is better than USA.

Makes no sense.

Arena should be fired for that performance. That was utterly pathetic. The only person on the field that showed they belonged was Pulisic, and he was subbed out.

Ream: flat out gave up a goal (and was burned multiple other times, only to be saved by Howard)
Cameron: perfect pass to their striker for the 2nd goal...
Villafana: Non-existant, we may as well have been playing with 10 men...
Zusi: Take that back...9 men...I'm to the point that I'd actually rather Timmy Chandler than Zusi...holy hell...
Bradley practically played as a 3rd center back (partially due to the ineptitude of Ream/Cameron)
Nagbe: had to drop deep to cover Bradley not being where he was supposed to be
Johnson: seems completely out of place (even though LM is his club position), dude couldn't complete a pass to save his life
Altidore: waste of talent/size and thinks he's better than he is
Wood: a ghost in the first half, at least showed signs of caring in the 2nd half (which is more than can be said about anyone sans Pulisic)
Dempsey: primadona who also thinks he's better than he is

I'm on record now: I'd rather them just call up the entire U-20s and let them play this out. Those dudes would care, and probably ultimately would be better overall.

We're in a world of hurt here now...

USA 8 pts
Honduras 8pts
Panama 7pts

USA has @Honduras, Panama, @Trinidad/Tobago
Honduras has USA, @Costa Rica, Mexico
Panama has Trinidad/Tobago, @USA, Costa Rica

Mexico is already in for sure. Costa Rica is basically one point away from being in for sure. Both of those teams can pretty much cruise, meaning Honduras isn't getting the best of those squads, and neither is Panama on the last week. Panama is going to beat T&T so they'll be at 10pts. This means if USA draws @Honduras, the match against Panama is literally a must-win or else we're at the very best in the playoff (do you really trust Arena and the USA in a playoff, regardless of who's it against?) or out. If USA loses to Honduras, we're f'd totally. This game @Honduras is more-or-less a must-win match.

I can't believe we're this close to not making the World Cup. This is embarrassing.

I might be pulling for Italy and England next summer. US might not make it....
I always root Germany and then Italy.

Maybe as less kids play football, our soccer talent will get better.

I disagree that Pulisic showed he belonged. I thought that was his worst game with the USMNT, and if he had played like he should have, it is a different game. He had some moments in midfield, but he certainly didn't do anything once in the box or in a scoring position.

As for the others, I agree they looked terrible.

Was he trying to do too much?

American soccer needs an identity of its own, starting with the MLS. Stop trying to rip off the European and Latin teams with your stupid names, chanting, coaches, etc. That's not what we do in America, we innovate and don't follow.
Also, enough with the "marketable and flashy" athletes, let's find guys who can actually play the game and aren't worried about their image. I envision US soccer as more of a blue collar/lunch pail styel of play rather than a finesse approach. Just my two cents.

I root for England, the Dutch and Argentina, but I hate Messi and the Dutch are staying home. Gonna have to root for my buddy CR7 and Portugal.

Bradley did play as 3rd CB, the midfield was lost, disgusting.

US soccer already has an identity though, doesn't it? Tough, athletic and hard-working but not particularly skilled technically. So we have some nice wins here and there but with that style we'll never seriously challenge on the world stage.

US Soccer is making tons of changes at the youth level that are all about emulating European-style training and player development.

It doesn't help that FIFA makes sure our home matches are always played where the opponent is sure
to have more fans than we do. Put this in the Giants stadium and it's more our crowd. Pathetic.

I was surprised by the location last night as well, but I was under the impression US Soccer chose the location. Why it was in the NY area, where the largest amount of Costa Ricans reside in the US is beyond me. Why not Seattle, Portland, Columbus, Salt Lake City, Kansas City, I could go on? At best I think it was a 60/40 crowd in the US favor last night, which is horrendous for a home match.

I don't see it that way but you probably know more about it than I do. To me I see a bunch of guys with stupid haircuts playing like it's one on one basketball instead of an 11 man game. FC Atlanta? Chivas USA? D.C. United? Why do we call some teams "Football Clubs" when we call the sport soccer here? Give me a break, be original.

Because Sunil Gulati is as crooked as the rest of the upper level soccer people. Just wait till you see the USA vs Panama game (which will be a must-win) in Orlando...

All of USSoccer needs to be gutted and revamped.

I'm just one opinion- don't have any of the answers.

We've never been technically skilled enough to possess the ball for any length of time. We can often survive, and if the competition is sub-par can even control the game for long stretches, but not against serious competition.

Chanting and singing is great. You really have an issue with that? Weird.

Your point is taken, but it would help if you could correctly identity the teams, i.e. it's Atlanta United FC.

Lol that's even worse. I'm not trying to be a wise ass about it, just is ridiculous to me. Why not have all teams be named like the Galaxy, Red Bulls, etc.?

I have an issue with it because it just seems like it's being copied like the naming conventions. I'd like to see soccer get bigger here because I love the sport, but it does seem are away.

That's fair. I love the sport too. The naming, supporters club, and soccer specific stadiums are actually all good things. It's helped grow the sport.

I don't have to like it, just make it work!

Now we're losing 1-0 at the half in Honduras. We fail to get points here, the humiliating prospect of missing our first WC in over 30 years becomes a distinct possibility.
