POST-PRACTICE UPDATE
Looked like this was a very physical practice, judging by the way the linemen, running backs and linebackers looked coming off the field. RB Mario Pender and some of the other backs looked completely drained. LB Tyrell Lyons had a big bandage on his chin. Several defensive linemen sat down outside the practice field to gather themselves before walking to the locker room.
I asked Jimbo about that, and he laughed and said that they got after it. We also could hear the hollering from the fields in the last couple segments, which usually means they were doing some good goal-line and short-yardage stuff.
Fisher said the running game was good at times, but the defense won their share. He was very complimentary of FB Freddie Stevenson and Mario Pender. Really gushed about Stevenson the most. Said he's playing "so good it's crazy." Running, blocking and catching.
On LB Lorenzo Phillips, Fisher said they're trying to get him involved and learn as much as he can quickly. Excited about his ability.
On the injury front, Fisher said DE Lorenzo Featherston needs a knee scope and will be out about a week and a half. DE Chris Casher also needs a knee scope and has a sprained MCL, so he will be out about 3-4 weeks.
But Fisher didn't seem too concerned. He said he's happy with the DE depth and said Josh Sweat is doing just about everything -- even short yardage and goal line. "That guy is going to be a really good player."
Fisher also confirmed our report from yesterday that LB Matthew Thomas is out for the year. He wouldn't say anything more than that he's "ineligible."
That's it for now. Will have the video up shortly.
EARLY UPDATE
FSU hit the practice fields a little later than usual today, so just getting back now.
The big news, as I posted earlier on a separate thread, is that juco LB Lorenzo Phillips is practicing. So his grade must have been posted yesterday, as Jimbo said it would. That obviously is a big help for a thin LB corps. Lorenzo will have to practice in shorts for a couple days, then shells for a couple days, and then he will be cleared to play in full pads.
On the injury front, QB Deondre Francois was practicing, and this time he didn't have any brace or boot on his ankle. So he must be really good to go now.
CB Tarvarus McFadden, WR George Campbell, DB Calvin Brewton, DT Justin Shanks, OL Cole Minshew and OL David Robbins were still out. DE Lorenzo Featherston was out, and he had a sleeve on his left knee. LB Sh'Mar Kilby-Lane was still in a blue non-contact jersey. CB Marcus Lewis still has a brace on his knee from the other day, but he is practicing. DE Chris Casher was not on the field at all ... we will ask about his status after practice. Freshman tight end Jalen Wilkerson also is not at practice (eligibility issue).
Scouts from the Jaguars and Dolphins were at practice.
FSU president John Thrasher visited practice with his wife and his daughter and three grandsons, who were visiting from the Orlando area. A.D. Stan Wilcox and his wife visited practice as well.
Will have more, including comments from Jimbo, after practice around 7.
