Weezer’s cover of Africa

Have y’all heard their version? It’s basically a straight cover of the song, and I have to say I like it.

Thoughts?

That’s why (the fact it’s a straight cover) I don’t like it. I much prefer covers that change the style, tempo, key etc... So I’ve got a lot of covers on my iPhone that change punk songs to bluegrass, pop to punk, ballads to fast rocking songs and vice verse, songs changed to a minor key etc...

Even though I’m a big enough of a Weezer fan that I’ve seen them live at least four times including twice where they were the headliner at a single day show rather than a festival, I actually prefer the new CeeLo Green version because it actually changes up the song somewhat. It’s still not a big change like I prefer, but more than the Weezer’s version.

And this is the sole reason I like it because I’m just not a fan of covers where the artist puts their stamp on it. Drives me bonkers to hear metal covers of songs from different genres.

Edit: just listened to the CeeLo Green version. Was really good.
I have a confession though. Africa, is probably my most favorite song ever. The music, melody and voice all blend so perfectly for me. I can listen to it over and over.

What I like is the backstory behind their cover (and it’s the reason it went viral) with a young fan begging them for months and months to do it...and they then dropped a cover of Rossana week before doing Africa.

You suckered me in with the Louis CK reference as I’m a fan but I have to say, those guys are SURPRISINGLY good. I even checked out some of their other stuff and they are quite talented.

I loved this version of their live “concert” at the Pie Pizzeria.

Louis CK nails the Simon & Garfunkel covers, but I think his cover of Rocket Man is his best.

Here are the covers that Weezer performed in Nashville

Happy Together > Longview
Take On Me (Rivers Cuomo acoustic solo)
Africa
Paranoid (morph from Say It Ain't So)

I still prefer Toto's original version but I'm glad they have brought the song back into the mainstream.

Edit: linked the live version.
Not a fan. Like the original but this cover is an exact copy of it. Prefer that artist put their own spin on the classic like Disturbed did with "Sound of Silence."

Interesting that several big names have covered the same song this year.

Musically, I like Cee-Lo a lot - since 1995 when Soul Food came out. One of my top 5 hip hop albums. And I like Weezer too (not enough to call myself a big fan though).

I didn’t really like either cover. Liked the Louis CK version best out of those 3. And Toto’s cover of Hash Pipe was very good in tribute/respect to Weezer. I’ve always liked the proverbial tip of the hat ... like when Prince covered Foo Fighters at the super bowl, completely out of nowhere, & nobody knows why (obviously Foo Fighters had covered Darling Nikki, of which Prince was supposedly not a fan ...).
