I'm pretty lucky I think, although I live in an HOA community with the normal cast of characters, my immediate neighbors are good people. The guy directly next to me is a former NYC cop that now owns a very successful lighting business (has contracts with all Disney properties, Atlantis, several Las Vegas etc etc), my other direct neighbor is an infectious diseases doctor, both sharp solid citizens.

This weekend when I came home the doctor told me about some guy trespasssing on my property taking photos of my house with a professional camera think Nikon, not smartphone. He asked the guy what he was doing and the guy didn't answer, just hopped in his car and sped off.

He said the guy was in a white Mercury sedan, Florida Plates BXB Y59. What would you guys do? Is there some way I can look up those plates, to see who this guy is, should I report it to the police?

I didn't file anything with my insurance after the hurricane, I can't think of why someone would be photographing my house.... It's just a standard house, several just like it in my neighborhood.

Step 1: Report it to the Police.
Step 2: Follow instructions here to look up the license plate on your own when the Police fail to do their job because Sting is too busy having tantric sex.

Step 3: Hire Ranger to follow him to the nearest dump for a staredown and intimidation session he will not understand because he doesn’t know you’ve looked him up.
Step 4: Profit.

This would bother me A LOT. Maybe because I travel so much, we have a gate to our neighborhood and there are only 8 houses in our neighborhood. But the main reason is when confronted the guy left. There are a bunch of real simple explanations; love the house want to build one just like it, I am a friend of his and he said I could take some photos for a project, etc., but to speed off tells me none of them are likely. Really 2 options file a report and hope the police can handle it; or do your own research and handle it yourself.

I hate to break the news to you, but your wife is taking out a home equity loan behind your back to finance a trip to the Caribbean with her new "friend". ;)

Seriously, could be all kind of explanations. That he wouldn't identify himself is a little suspicious though. Could be a real estate site thing like zillow, trulia. Could be google. Could be working for appraisers looking at comps. Could be working for someone trying to sell you something, security system, gutters, painting, etc. Or it could be some dude casing your joint because he knows you are a Locker Roomer and that place is a goldmine.

Yea, I have two home improvement projects in the works, widining the driveway and plantingn some new trees, have the service contracted for the first week of December, have a quote out for painting the house, and just sent that guy an affirmative response today to his RFP.

However I have met with both of those folks in person, and neither of them was in a 2009 White Mercury Sabel Premier (I looked it up, but didn't do the step where I have to give my info to get the registered owner of the car's info).

I did lose a shutter in the hurricane, and the painter is supposed be sourcing that for me. That's the only thing I could think of.

Maybe the guy walked away because he wasn't an english speaker (my guess is that paint crew isn't). It still bothers me.

As a last resort have F4Gary strafe him.

Sounds like an insurance adjuster.

Is your renewal coming up?

I was thinking insurance, but no, I renewed months ago and didn't file anything with the latest hurricanes.

I just had the cops out here, they said the dude lives in west melbourne but there wasn't enough to even go talk to him. Just to keep an eye out.

I'm confident that he didn't go into the fence or back yard, I was dog sitting my BIL's 75lb black pit bull, and you'd be a nut case to hop the fence with that dog patroling the yard. It's made out of muscle.

Wow...I’m surprised the cops won’t go talk to him. Trespassing is illegal the last I remember.

You’d be surprised. There were some homeless people living in the woods next to my rehab facility in Panama City...which is fine. Until they stole some decorative brickwork off my building to make fire pits and dug up trees and bushes we had planted to sell to someone else which is NOT fine. So we called the cops and they wouldn’t do anything, and I mean ANYTHING until we put up “trespassers will be subject to criminal prosecution” signs all over the boundary of the woods (that we didn’t own). So my property manager and I had to track down the owner of the property next to us on our own and convince them to put up the signs. Only after all that hassle did the cops evict the homeless camp.

And I’m not hardhearted, if they hadn’t started stealing from me I would have let them be at least until we start seeing patients in Jan.

The fact that he wouldn't identify himself and as you said left quickly is what bothers me. Anyone who has a legitimatete business, reason for doing something like that etc. would just say so. Like hey yea I work for an appraiser and Jim down the street is selling his home or yea I do X here is my card we could do some really nice things for your house too. Dude taking pictures of your house and leaving quickly is not normal. Who knows maybe it is all in the up and up.

Oh and by the way if you know Frees history you should know he is more than capable of handling his own business. Now if he wants help mulching the body I am in.

You should have gone out there with a couple of hundred bucks and told them that the last one breathing gets the money. Let them sort the problem out themselves through some competition.

I would figure out a way to find where in West Melbourne he lives and do some investigating of my own...

Usually, if Underwriting was sending someone to inspect they would make an appointment because they primarily want to see your roof. Definitely think you're on a hit list. T's & P's.

Thats the part that would bother me the most as well.

I'd call the PD back and have them reiterate they aren't taking any action. They may be slammed with existing crimes, but investigating suspicious behavior falls into the realm of crime prevention IMO. Unless its across jurisdictions, then it gets dicey and may be the real reason they don't want to "drive all the way over there" just to see if the vehicle/driver is home.

Did you say you live in a gated community?

If yes wouldn’t the gate guard have a record of this guy?

I would start “ packin’” if i were you

Wifey too!

I'm always packing anyway. I got my wife a G19 Gen 3 for her birthday and we go to the range all the time. I wouldn't mess with her at this point. You don't want to get between a Mama bear and her cubs.

It's just weird. That website that Tribe put up there you can get the name and address of the person the car is registered for but they track that you did it and you have to attest that you are getting it for a lawful reason, which I'm not. It's only $3. If one of you was a real buddy you'd do it for me!

Remember when Dan started the "good money" thread and you told us what you're making currently? Ever think Ole Dan was doing some cyber surveillance finding his best target? Sly fox that Dan.

I would really worry if the guy was also looking at your Queen Palms. There seems to be some crossover stuff involving a dude clicking pics of seemingly random homes and the cheap removal of dead palms. Word has it that trips to the landfill and neighbors with “problematic fence syndrome” are also somehow involved. They seem to run primo white Mercury’s ( who wouldn’t if given the chance) as well as big dawg pickemups. Stay safe, my friend.

Ok, just ran the search for you. The car is registered to a guy named Anton Chigurh. Anyone you know?
