I read this book by his lawyer friend several years ago.

It wasn't totally negative but portrayed Johnny as an alcoholic, loner, ruthless individual with a nutty Mother.

Yep, not many who knew him will dispute any of that. Somewhere there is an interview with Joe Namath calling Johnny "a mean drunk."
