Why did FSU agree to this game?

Why schedule a first game against a top ranked team? It serves no purpose. The conference games are all that matters.

Now they are 0-1, lost their quarterback and will struggle for the rest of the year.

Per ESPN: "Losing Francois for any significant time would seriously damage the Seminoles' hopes of unseating defending national champion Clemson in the ACC's Atlantic Division."

So, FSU seriously damaged their hopes of winning their division by playing a "HYPE" first game.

NO REASON TO PLAY THAT GAME!!!

Great Exposure for team and school , helps recruiting , exposes young players to big time game atmosphere just to name a few reasons. Plus if we win it is a feather in the cap, if we lose nothing really changes, as we have to win the ACC to get in the playoffs and a loss to Bama does not change that fact.

The injury is unfortunate, but could have happened agaisnt anyone .
A bad outcome does not change the fact there are benefits to having your school plastered all over ESPN for a month

I hope FSU always is willing to schedule games against teams like Alabama, Oklahoma, USC, etc. Can't add wins against them to your team's history if you're never willing to play those games.

Francois' injury is a helluva thing, but if it happened against Charleston is it somehow easier to stomach?

This was a barometer for our team, and for the better part of three quarters it was a great struggle. Props to Bama on taking over the game on special teams. If Gavin snags that ball on the run and puts up a return like we saw against Michigan who knows what the outcome is. The game was that close even at that point.

Final score reflects how the dam burst, but not how close the game was played.

If you can't see why FSU would want to open their season against #1 Alabama, I don't think there's anyone that can help you, OP.

FSU seriously damaged their hopes of winning their division by playing a "HYPE" first game.

Rather win the conference than a hype game.

Exposure for team and school: We lost by 17 (one touchdown 1st half, no additional points). Not good exposure.

Helps recruiting, exposes young players to big time game atmosphere just to name a few reasons: I bet they would rather play in the ACC Championship than the Chick-fil-a.

...nothing really changes, as we have to win the ACC to get in the playoffs and a loss to Bama does not change that fact. Lost our quarterback for the season. Ask Florida how its going without a dependable QB. NO ACC Atlantic, NO playoff.

...benefits to having your school plastered all over ESPN for a month: Rather be talked about in November than August.

NO BENEFIT TO PLAYING #1 in a HYPE game.

$5 million.

Also, win the conference, even after losing this game, and FSU is most likely in the playoff. Losing the starting QB doesn't help, but this game was a win/win.

Hell, if FSU decided to open at home with The Citadel, everyone would be bitching about playing a nobody and having to pay them. Even in that game anyone could have been injured and made things more difficult for the remainder of the year. James was injured last year against a nobody team, so what's the difference.

The loss of the game itself doesn't have a bearing on the playoff at this point.

We "seriously damaged" our hopes of winning our division last year by scheduling Charleston Southern and losing Derwin for the year. See how that works?

It took a really good defense, and NFL type of receiver like Mike Williams, an NFL TE like Jordan Leggett, a really good defense, and a very special player like Deshaun Watson to beat Alabama. FSU is good, and from top to bottom has more star power and talent than Clemson, but Clemson had (has) and incredible front four, and really the entire defense is good, and a better QB and WR's than FSU currently have. Clemson's defense is better this year, but without Watson, Williams and Leggett, I don't know if we could beat them this year.

You forget that it took the ACC to give your school the FSU v Clemson game with those egregious penalties.

OP wants to be UF. (This year was a fluke for them starting off against a team with a pulse)

Lol. Last time they played out of state was 91 and they lost then. Took them 26 years to give it another go only to be destroyed by Michigan (the Gators were the beneficiaries of turnover points unlike FSU that were the victims, take that away and they managed 3 pts). It might be 36 before they give it another go.

Like the Oladele kid from Miami said, football is a game of men. You line up and play the best team you can play. Some people get too caught up into backing into a championship.

I can see the argument both ways on this one.

If you want to start each season in a cupcake cocoon, go be a gate.

Would you really call your team big time if, like the team from the east, you only played an out of conference team out of state once every 30 years. Pooook , what a punk ace schedule. Playing the sisters of the poor when you aim to be big time is a scardy cat way to be...

FSU should and will continue to schedule these games. It was only a few short years ago that FSU was the defending national champ and on a 20 game plus win streak and there was talk of us not getting in the playoff due to schedule and the way we were winning. Having OOC big games is a huge plus.

That game cost 'Bama both their starting OLBs - out for the rest of the season.
