Today we will discuss Kevin Johns –Co-Offensive Coordinator Oklahoma Sooners

I first met Coach Kevin Johns as he was an assistant coach at Northwestern University. He has been both and OC at Indiana (2012-2016), Western Michigan 2017, Texas Tech 2018, Memphis (2019/2021), Duke (2022-2023).

Why Kevin Johns – In 2017 Western Michigan was rated 25th in scoring offense (33.9 PPG), Texas Tech was 16th in scoring offense (37.3 PPG), Memphis was 8th in scoring offense (40.4 PPG) Duke was 32nd in Scoring Offense (32.8 PPG). His offenses have had success scoring at each stop for Johnson. He is someone that will mix it up. Johns took over as CO-OC in OU win over #7 rated Alabama. What was impressive was his designed runs for QB Jackson Arnold. The Sooners QB had 25 carries for 131 yards. You have to wonder what Luke Kromenhoek could do in this offensive scheme.

OU vs. Alabama – The Sooners ran the ball 50 times for 257 yards and 2 touchdowns against Alabama. Oklahoma relied on QB Jackson Arnold to set the tone. As mentioned above how would Luke K be perform in an offense that would utilize his ability to run. Luke showed against Miami the ability to not only run but be tough to bring down. Johns has also been a QB Coach so that would help out in the development of FSU young QB’S. He excelled with quarterback Riley Leonard of Duke who also was an athletic qb.

Why not Johns: RECRUITING, RECRUITING RECRUITING. When you coach at schools like Indiana, Western Michigan, Texas Tech, Memphis and Duke you are looking for prospects under the radar to help your program out. Can Johns recruit at a high level at FSU which just fired their OC because of his lack of success recruiting and developing talent at FSU?

Final Thoughts: There is no question that Johns is a good coach. He has proven himself at each stop. I don’t have any doubts that Johns could have success at FSU running the offense. The real question is can Johns recruit at a high level? Landing top flight talent on offense is key.
