Time after time I see people mentioning freedom of speech and the first amendment as defenses to suffering consequences of saying or doing controversial or inflammatory things.

Everyone in this nation should learn this simple thing about the first amendment freedom of speech: IT ONLY APPLIES TO LIMIT GOVERNMENT RESTRICTIONS. Private employers or anyone else can restrict what you do and say or can admonish or punish you for it.

If the NFL and teams wanted to fire every single player who takes a knee during the national anthem, that is not violating the first amendment.

This lady learned another lesson that many people don't understand. Unless you have a contract that states otherwise, outside of certain limited exceptions, employers can fire you for any reason they want.
