Soccer FSU hosts Rice on Thursday at 7 p.m. (ACC Network)

FSU sports information:

The No. 1 Florida State soccer team (2-0-0) continues its four-game homestand on Thursday evening against Rice (2-0-0). The Seminoles currently hold an unbeaten streak of 34 games against non-conference opponents dating back to 2019.

FSU will play Rice for the first time since 2022. The two sides had their inaugural meeting back in Houston in 2022. Florida State defeated Rice 5-0 with Maria Alagoa and Beata Olsson each recording multi-goal games.

The Seminoles broke another school record in Sunday’s home victory over North Florida, achieving a 25-game unbeaten streak for the first time in program history while extending its longest winning streak to 17 games. FSU also holds a 36-game scoring streak dating back to 2022, the longest in program history. The Seminoles have continued to be formidable at the Seminole Soccer Complex with 17 straight victories including eight NCAA Tournament wins. FSU has conceded just one goal since last season’s ACC Championship victory with seven shutouts.

The reigning national champions achieved a historic home opening victory against North Florida. FSU scored 10 goals, the most scored since 2009. Taylor Huff recorded her first-ever hat trick inside 75 minutes to become the first player to record a hat trick since Lauren Flynn over NC State, marking the first time the Seminoles achieved back-to-back hat tricks in regular season home games.

Ashlyn Puerta, Lara Dantas, and Solai Washington each scored their first collegiate goals while Camille Ashe recorded two goals for her first career brace. Mimi Van Zanten scored in her second straight game while Olivia Lebdaoui scored her first goal since 2022 after missing the 2023 season due to injury.

Huff began her 2024 campaign in dominant fashion, recording a hat trick of assists at South Florida before scoring a hat trick of goals against North Florida. For a second straight season she earned the first ACC Offensive Player of the Week award and was named to TopDrawerScoccer’s Women’s Team of the Week. Ashe received a TopDrawerSoccer’s WTOTW honorable mention for her two goal performance over North Florida and for her part in the two shutouts.

Gates will open at 6 p.m. and the first 100 fans will receive a free FSU Soccer foam finger upon entry. The 7 p.m. game will be broadcast on ACC Network and will be the first nationally televised game of the 2024 season.

Soccer FSU soccer cruises past Rice 3-0

FSU sports information:

The No. 1 Florida State soccer team (3-0-0) used three goals from three freshmen to defeat Rice (2-1-0) 3-0 on Thursday night. FSU begins the season unbeaten through three games for a fifth consecutive season.

The Seminoles were able to establish their dominance early with numerous shots towards goal, recording 20 total shots in the first half. The persistence paid off after Mimi Van Zanten laid a pass off to Ashlyn Puerta who used a deft turn past the defender and unleashed a beautiful strike into the top right corner for the opening goal. Puerta has scored the first goal of the game in her first two career starts.

The next 45 minutes saw more of the same as Van Zanten played a great cross into Lara Dantas, her right-footed effort was going wide before Wrianna Hudson tapped in her first-ever goal at the back post to double the advantage. Dantas put the game to rest with an incredible shot from well past the 18-yard box that was crushed into the back of the net for the third and final goal of the evening.

FSU fired off 39 shots to Rice’s one in the contest and has yet to concede a goal after the opening three games of the season. Florida State has had three different freshmen score in back-to-back games.

Florida State will continue its four-game homestand with a top-20 battle against Georgia next Thursday. First kick is set for 7 p.m. and available to stream on ACC Network Extra.

Football Molded partly by Chris Weinke, Ga. Tech's Haynes King seeks to take off in year 2

A common denominator for Haynes King's career: The quarterback's connection to an FSU legend (Chris Weinke), a former FSU coach (Jimbo Fisher) and the current FSU coach (Mike Norvell). All of them have been intrigued by King.

Norvell was Memphis’ coach when he saw King’s skill set early at Longview (Texas) High, where he developed into a three-star quarterback and had 30 touchdowns (20 passing, 10 rushing) in his senior season in 2019.

“We did a satellite camp in East Texas, maybe going into his junior year,” Norvell said. “We offered him that night. I’ve known his dad since I got into coaching. John King is one of the great coaches in the state of Texas. So much respect for him. And a lot of respect for the young man.

"You see his growth throughout his career. I think he’ll be one of the best quarterbacks in the country.”

Auburn hands FSU volleyball its first loss

FSU sports information:

The No. 15 Florida State volleyball team (4-1) suffered its first loss of the season to Auburn (6-0) in four sets (25-22, 18-25, 20-25, 20-25) on Sunday afternoon at Neville Arena.

FSU got off to a great start in set one as they jumped out to an early lead and were the first to 10 and 15 points in the set. Auburn fought back to tie the set at 20, but the Seminoles scored five out of the final seven points to take the first set.

The Seminoles were unable to find a rhythm in the second set as Auburn led from nearly start to finish in the second set to tie the match.

The team went back and forth through the first 20 points of set three as the set was tied at 10. Auburn used a quick 4-0 run to go ahead 14-10 and continued to put the foot on the gas to extend their lead to 21-15. FSU fought back to make things interesting late in the set, but it was too little too late as the Tigers to the lead in the match.

The teams once again went back and forth in the first half of the set, but the Tigers used a run in the middle of the set to take a 19-15 lead. The Seminoles responded with a 3-0 run of its own to cut the lead to one, but Auburn had one more run in them and ended the match on a 6-2 run to hand FSU its first loss of the season.

Audrey Koenig was phenomenal for the Seminoles as she recorded 19 kills including her 1,000th career kill. Koenig is just the sixth player in school history to have 1,000 career kills in the rally scoring era. Kenna Phelan and Loren Robertson each recorded double doubles as Phelan had 26 assists and 19 digs while Robertson added 22 assists and 12 digs. Phelan's 19 digs was a career high.

FSU will have a quick turnaround as they will face North Florida in Jacksonville on Tuesday at 5 p.m. The match can be seen live on ESPN+.

Question

Rarely post, not making excuses, we were manhandled upfront on both sides of the ball today and didn't deserve the W. But, the chance to win the game, wasn't the WR for GT out of bounds on 3rd and long before the 44 yard kick? We would've had 45+ seconds to move it down the field let Fitz attempt a long one or break something......just asking, I reviewed the play a few times, hes out of bounds clearly before going down.

Football Recruiting Rivals250 LB has FSU near the top of list after visit

FSU got to host Izayia Williams for the first time and made a strong impression. Norvell has been working on this one personally, per the junior.
