Football An early look at Memphis in season opener vs. UNA, take on Troy at noon tomorrow on ESPNU

There is no overstating the importance of Florida State's game against Memphis next Saturday. A win over the Tigers could kick start FSU's season, a loss would make the chances of FSU finishing this year with a winning record and bowl eligibility a real challenge with games left vs. SMU, Clemson, Miami, UNC, Notre Dame and Florida still ahead.

Memphis started its season against FCS program North Alabama. The Tigers won easily, 40-0, and we will have a better idea of who they are after they take on Troy this weekend. That game will be televised by ESPNU at noon on Saturday. The Tigers game vs. UNA does give us a chance to see what Memphis likes to do on offense from a tendency perspective.

One of the things that jumped out to me about Memphis based on the stat sheet from the UNA game is that fact that they managed just 59 yards on the ground on 26 carries. Of the 59 teams that opened their 2024 season against and FCS opponent, Memphis had the second fewest rushing yards.

Against UNA, the Tigers ran more zone scheme running plays (16) than gap scheme plays (7).

A Gap runs-5
B Gap runs-7
C Gap runs-2
D Gap (outside TE) or Perimeter runs-5 D gap runs, 5 perimeter runs, 2 undefined

Another thing that stood out to me from the PFF stats only one of the 6 Memphis running back forced a missed tackle against UNA.

Throwing the ball Memphis likes to spread it around. Eight Memphis players were targeted by QB Seth Henigan at least twice. Demeer Blankumsee and Roc Taylor led the team with five targets each followed by Koby Drake (4) and Marcello Bussey (3), Sutton Smith (3) and Anthony Landsphere (3). As group they dropped two passes.

Henigan was very sharp throwing the ball. He completed 22 of 30 passes (73.3-percent) with an adjusted completion percentage of 82.8-percent.

Breakdown of Hennigan throws

Between the Numbers

At or behind the LOS: 5 of 5 for 3 yards
1-10 yards: 6 of 8 for 43 yards
10-20 yards: 3 of 5 for 71 yards
20 plus yards: 1 of 3 for 35 yards

Outside left:

At or behind the LOS: None
1-10 yards: 3 of 3 for 35 yards
10-20 yards: None
20 plus yards: 1 of 1 for 45 yards

Outside right

At or behind the LOS: None
1-10 yards: 2 of 2 for 13 yards
10-20 yards: None
20 plus yards: 1 of 2 for 30 yards

Defensively, the Tigers gave up just 185 total yards to UNA. They gave up 67 rushing yards on 31 attempts. They gave up 118 yards through the air with UNA completing 17 of 28 passes. According to PFF stats they only had three missed tackles vs the run. They had no missed tackles vs. pass plays. Memphis was also very disruptive in the passing game as far as getting pressure on the QB. As a team they had 21 total pressures (6 sacks, 2 QB hits, 13 hurries) on 34 pass rush opportunities.
DE William Whitlow led the team with four pressures. Seven defenders were credited with multiple pressures.

Looking forward to watching them vs. Troy tomorrow.

Golf PGSF FedEx Cup Week 34 The BMW Championship

bmw-field2.jpg

It’s the second leg of the FedExCup Playoffs, and just like this week’s golf course, the drama is set to reach new heights.
The BMW Championship returns to Colorado for the first time since 2014, where Castle Pines Golf Club hosts the TOUR for the first time since 2006 – at 6,200 feet above sea level and measuring more than 8,000 yards on the scorecard.
The top 50 in the FedExCup standings earned their way into this week’s field, led by Scottie Scheffler, while Hideki Matsuyama looks to maintain his momentum after winning the FedExCup Playoffs opener at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, Tennessee.

Jake Knapp, Mackenzie Hughes and Tom Kim were bumped from inside the top 50 to outside the magic number Sunday at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, surrendering their spots at the BMW Championship and in next season’s Signature Events.
Only the top 30 in the FedExCup standings will qualify for next week’s TOUR Championship and stay in contention for the PGA TOUR’s ultimate prize, the FedExCup.
So, while we’ll all be watching the top of the leaderboard, there will plenty of drama around the bubble, too.
Here’s everything you need to know as the PGA TOUR returns to Castle Pines.
FIELD NOTES: Hideki Matsuyama looks to go back-to-back to start the FedExCup Playoffs after winning the FedEx St. Jude Championship with birdies on his final two holes. Matsuyama withdrew from last year’s BMW Championship after the first round due to injury, but he is playing some of the best golf of his life now – which is music to the ears of International Team Presidents Cup Captain Mike Weir, with Matsuyama leading the International standings … Viktor Hovland is hoping his fine Playoffs play continues at the BMW Championship as he enters as the defending champion. Hovland, who won the BMW Championship by two shots last year, hasn’t had his best season – and certainly not as compared to last year. But he started the Playoffs with a bang, finishing tied for second in Memphis … Patrick Cantlay’s name has become synonymous with the BMW Championship the last few seasons. Cantlay, who is ninth on the FedExCup standings, won this tournament in back-to-back years (at different golf courses) in 2021 and 2022. Cantlay finished tied for 12th last week in Memphis … Can we see a bounce-back from Rory McIlroy this week? The three-time FedExCup champion finished at 9-over last week at the FedEx St. Jude Championship and was second-to-last on the leaderboard. McIlroy enters the week fifth on the FedExCup standings … Jason Day, who is 25th in the FedExCup standings, is the only player in this week’s field who played The International at Castle Pines the last time it hosted the TOUR, in 2006 … Billy Horschel won the most recent BMW Championship in Colorado, 10 years ago. Horschel, No. 19 in the FedExCup standings, won the 2014 iteration by two shots at Cherry Hills Country Club … With Xander Schauffele’s tie for second at the FedEx St. Jude Championship – and with the bonus points available for a win at the BMW Championship – he is finally within striking distance of Scottie Scheffler’s hefty FedExCup lead. With 2,000 FedExCup points to the winner, Schauffele, who is at 5,037.33 points, could technically jump Scheffler (at 6,532.75 points) for the No. 1 spot heading into the TOUR Championship. Scheffler finished fourth in Memphis.
FEDEXCUP BUBBLE UPDATES: Keegan Bradley scored the final spot in the BMW Championship after a 2-under 68 Sunday at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. The U.S. Team Presidents Cup captain’s assistant and 2025 Ryder Cup captain’s playing season continues this week at the BMW Championship … Only the top 30 in the FedExCup standings after the BMW Championship will advance to the TOUR Championship, with Denny McCarthy currently at the No. 30 spot … McCarthy leads Tommy Fleetwood at No. 31 by just two points, however. Chris Kirk, at No. 32, is only nine points back … Hovland, last year’s FedExCup champ, moved from No. 57 to No. 16 after his tie for second last week in Memphis and is now likely safe to return to East Lake … Sam Burns started the FedExCup Playoffs at No. 29 but moved to No. 18 after his tie for fifth at TPC Southwind … A year after winning the 2023 U.S. Amateur, Nick Dunlap finished tied for fifth at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, moving from No. 67 to No. 48. Dunlap did not earn any FedExCup points for his triumph at The American Express earlier this year as an amateur but won again at the Barracuda Championship. Had he missed his par attempt on the 72nd hole, he would have finished 51st in the standings … Brian Harman, Tom Hoge and Taylor Pendrith are Nos. 29, 28 and 27, respectively, heading into the BMW Championship. They’ll each need to play solidly at Castle Pines to advance to the TOUR Championship.
The top 125 on the FedExCup standings after the FedExCup Fall, which concludes at The RSM Classic in November, will retain exempt status for 2025.
FEDEXCUP THIS WEEK: The winner of the BMW Championship receives 2,000 FedExCup Points.
COURSE: Castle Pines Golf Club, par 72, 8,130 yards. The BMW Championship returns to Colorado for the first time in a decade, while Castle Pines is back on the PGA TOUR schedule for the first time since 2006. Castle Pines hosted The International (a Modified Stableford event on the PGA TOUR) from 1986-2006. The course features 400 feet of elevation change and the average altitude is 6,200 feet. At 8,130 yards, it will be the longest course in PGA TOUR history. The entire course has been renovated – new bunkers, rebuilt tees and greens, and renovated water features – since the TOUR was last there for The International in 2006.
72-HOLE RECORD: 261, Patrick Cantlay/Bryson DeChambeau (2021 – Caves Valley Golf Club)
18-HOLE RECORD: 59, Jim Furyk (Round 2, 2013 – Conway Farms Golf Club)
LAST TIME: Hovland won the second leg of the FedExCup Playoffs by two shots over Scheffler and Matt Fitzpatrick en route to capturing the FedExCup the next week. Hovland began the day three shots back of Scheffler and Fitzpatrick but zipped up the leaderboard after making seven birdies in his final nine holes. His final-round 61 was a career low, and it set a new course record. McIlroy finished fourth while Max Homa and Brian Harman finished tied for fifth.

Usc vs lsu

These types of games are why we all love college football. For a first game out these two teams put on a nice performance. I said it on Seminole Sidelines - I was a big fan of Caleb Williams. That being said I feel that Lincoln went against what he liked to do offensively. While Lincoln runs the air raide - unlike others who run it he likes to run the ball. You saw it last night that he ran the football. He also utilized the tight ends. Miller Moss fits what Lincoln likes to do more. Miller Moss is accurate throwing the football. He also stands in there and will take a hit before releasing the football.

Anthony Lynn Jr....I would like to be his agent today. He is a stud as a DC. He made ucla very good on defense. He just turned usc around in less than a year. He was a great addition. He may become the first 3 million dollar DC. He and Lance Guidry at Miami will both be paid.

LSU qb - I liked what I saw from him last year in their bowl game. He is going to be a good one. Funny lsu fans hate Brian Kelly today and think he will never win. Fan bases should stay off message boards. LSU program was a mess after Coach O left. Coach O got them a title but their roster when he left had no talent. LSU is recruiting very well. This idea that you have to win in year 3 is BS. Michigan did not win in year with JH. While the transfer portal can help turn a program around quicker - I also think it can stunt your growth just as quickly. LSU is a year away. They have a qb who can win a title. They are a flawed team but LSU will have a good team.

Duce Robinson - he was Dominic Robinson....I remember when DROB was recruited by FSU. He was the next Deion. In the Florida / Cali game DROB was one of the best layers in the game. He never lived up to the hype. I do believe he did catch the ball on 4th and 14 against Florida before Rix hit PK to win the game. His son is the real deal. Man fsu could use him this year - he is a better version of Johnny Wilson.

I laughed when people thought Lincoln would struggle in the BIG 10. When he rolls his teams out against Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa - scoring won't be a problem. I think he had success early on in that conference.

FSU volleyball sweeps FAU on Friday

FSU sports information:

The No. 21 Florida State volleyball team (6-1) kicked off the Seminole Classic with a sweep (25-23, 25-14, 26-24) against Florida Atlantic (5-3) on Friday night in front of a sold-out crowd at Tully Gym. Friday was the first meeting between the in-state foes since 2019, and FSU kept its unbeaten streak alive against the Owls improving to 11-0 all time.

The Seminoles held similar standings with the Owls during the beginning of the first set, but FSU used a 7-1 run to jump ahead 16-11. The Owls continued to chip away, and eventually tied the set at 22. The Owls had a chance to take the lead, but an attacking error gave the point to the Noles. Taylor Head put down a big kill to get the Noles to set point. The Owls responded with a kill of their own, but Khori Louis slammed the ball into the floor to give the Noles the first set.

The second set saw FSU take control early on, and they ran away with the set with some more great offense as they were hitting .491 through two sets.

Set three began with multiple back and forth points with both teams unable to find a rhythm. Florida Atlantic gained some momentum with a 6-1 run to take a 13-9 lead. The Owls took a 15-13 lead into the media timeout, but back-to-back kills from Louis tied the set, and Head gave the Noles the lead. The two teams traded points, but the Owls used a 3-1 spurt to take a 21-19 lead. FSU responded with a 3-0 run of its own thanks to kills from Louis and Filimaua to take the lead. Both teams saw its fair share of errors, but with the set tied at 24, Louis and Filimaua capped off their career nights with back-to-back kills to end the match.

Louis had a game-high 15 kills on 23 attempts (.609) which tied her career high. Louis also contributed eight blocks which was one shy of her career high. Filimaua had a career high in both kills (14) and hitting percentage (.520) while also leading the team with nine digs. Head also had a solid night offensively with 10 kills on 25 attempts (.400). Loren Robertson led the way by dishing out 28 assists to go with seven digs.

FSU continues the Seminole Classic weekend with a matchup against UCF on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game can be watched live on ACCNX.

FSU's ambitions extend to women's sports, adding lacrosse

(Also posted this yesterday on Osceola Village, but sharing here too)

Construction crews worked day and night on Doak Campbell Stadium ahead of the football team’s opener last week. There’s also a crane and work crews nearby as the early stages of the football operations building are taking shape.

With all of the activity and more than $400 million being spent on the two football projects, as well as requests from all of the coaches on Florida State’s campus, why would the athletics department launch another sport? The Seminoles will add women’s lacrosse, which is set to play in the spring of 2026, and have already hired coach Sara Tisdale.

The answer is Title IX, a law that requires universities that receive federal dollars to make strides in its offerings of women’s athletics and expand the number of scholarships or opportunities for women to compete in athletics.

“We did a comprehensive Title IX review of where we were when I became athletic director, working with (FSU general counsel) Carolyn Egan,” FSU athletics director Michael Alford told the Osceola. “And just looking at what our numbers were, what our facilities are, the opportunities we provide our student-athletes, so it was a comprehensive Title IX review. After that review, it was obvious we needed to add a sport because we want to always make sure we’re in compliance with Title IX.”

Question about true freshman WR’s

I wanted to ask why do we never see true freshman WR’s making a big impact at FSU? I can’t remember any in at least a decade or more. I remember people saying Jimbo’s offense was too complicated for WR’s to learn etc. is Norvell’s offense too complicated for true freshmen WR’s? I can’t help but notice other top teams throughout the country have true freshman WR’s starting and being impactful. See their highlights each week makes me wonder. We have had and have some highly touted true freshman WR’s. Any idea?

Football Kutz Column: Don't Panic, Move Forward

I watched the game in person. Have watched a replay. Have read the Osceola's Curt Weiler's and Pat Burnham's takes on the game as well as many of yours on the Osceola Village.
I totally agree it was a disappointing performance in a game I thought FSU would win 24-10.
There are certainly concerns coming out of the game, I agree.
That was last Saturday. Today is Tuesday, an eternity in college football and while I agree with what others have written, there's no purpose in me rehashing what you all saw with your own eyes.

In this column I acknowledge concerns and offer a few of my own observations and perspectives because history tells us very good Florida State teams have been right here before, 0-1 or 0-2 to open the season. There were plenty of questions back then. Was it coaching or a lack of talent caused by lousy recruiting?

Those questions persisted until those slow-starting teams finished 11-1 and 10-2 with a state championship, ACC Championship, Bowl Championship and a top 5 finish. So how did the Bowden staff manage to develop those individuals into a team ? And my thoughts on how will Mike Norvell approach it this week.

Florida State has been knocked down but they are far from knocked out... especially with a 12-team playoff.
It's time to get off the mat, use the film to correct the issues, and move forward.
