Hearing a little more that as part of the new B1G TV contract negotiations that are ongoing right now, one idea being considered is a more significant scheduling development for the B1G, PAC, and ACC. Instead of 8 conference games isolated within each conference, there has been some consideration of 10 Alliance games counting towards some type of intra-conference playoff. Possibly dividing up all the Alliance teams into pods instead of divisions and all Alliance games would count as part of the pod standings.

Trying to get more details but I know ESPN wants to hang onto part of the B1G rights so there is motivation for them to play ball with this idea or else risk getting shut out of the B1G rights altogether.
