As the storm approaches Bayou Country

To hit on the very day Katrina hit back in 2005. Flooding is going to be a problem. This storm coming from a different angle than Katrina so hopefully the levees will hold.
This storm is further west at the moment and may be much weaker at 110 mph or so. These poor people have been battered the past few years from other storms, too.
Just asking for everyone to keep this area and their people in your thoughts and prayers.
Saints already canceled their game. Just hope covid and storms don't effect our schedule this year. But there are much bigger fish to fry when concerned about a stupid game.

The Storm may be a Cat 4 and is tracking a little west of New Orleans - but per usual the east side of it is larger...flooding rain and tornadoes are a threat all the way over to Pensacola.

It's expected to go right over Baton Rouge, which is a little inland fortunately but will still be hit hard. That's an interesting tidbit about the date. Best of luck to everyone that stayed, but if I lived near the Louisiana coast, Ida left the state a few days ago.

it's been so long that i forget all the attributes but i recall the tidal time of day and katrina still packing much of its cat 5 storm surge despite winds diminishing were significant contributors?

Winds going into Lake Ponchatrain was what caused the lake to flood and the levees to break. Much different angle this time and far more to the west; but those levees were reconstructed with band aids.....Some to the far west may break, but not those that would threaten the city; as of now.

I once actually danced on top of my bar stool in there after a victory over Tulane in 1987 (or 88?) Barkeep suggested to my hubby that I be escorted safely back to our hotel.

Hotels in Mobile and the Eastern Shore area (Daphne and Spanish Fort) are already full of people evacuating Louisiana. I fear this storm, in many ways, can be worse than Katrina. God help them all. Surely, the levees will hold despite being held together by band aids. So much of that entire area is barely above sea level as we all know that the greater Nawlins area is actually below sea level. Traffic in Slidell is at a grid lock now. All this and the fact the entire area is so compromised by covid. The only good thing I've heard is that their governor just announced that the overall hospitalizations are down 20% from two weeks ago. Used to live over that way and have so many friends and colleagues I'm concerned about. Haven't heard anything about high/low tides yet. The bridge over Lake Ponch to Slidell was rebuilt and is much higher than before Katrina. Houma looks like a direct hit. Baton Rouge looms in danger. Again, I do believe in the power of prayer. Now, where is our government in making plans NOW and staging supplies NOW? I'm sure FPL are sending trucks now to help. Learn from our past mistakes and it shouldn't take three to four days (at least) like 2005 to get people help. Biden and Company better have their **** together NOW! I've got a horrible feeling about this. Thank you for allowing me to indulge with my concerns.

We briefly discussed the approaching hurricane. They are more worried about Nola transplants rolling into Houston — and never leaving — than they are about the hurricane. Several people who evacuated to Houston never came back and the crime rate in Houston skyrocketed. Many from the 9th ward had no job and no home to go back to.

Not directly a hurricane issue but there but there is a search underway for a boater who went missing yesterday while scalloping a few miles east of the St. Marks Lighthouse. Somehow his boat pulled anchor and drifted away, his buddy made it to shore.

And now its turning dark, outer band thunderstorms are passing through and the wind coming up. I'm praying he's hanging on along the saltmarsh but it doesn't look good...

Its only going to get more difficult. Local government has issued a statement that those who have not left should shelter in place. This could get bad, but fingers crossed!

Our local power company sent 30 trucks over that way this evening and they'll stop somewhere east of NOLA and be ready to get started as soon as the storm passes.

This is now very nasty and ugly. That whole region is going to be hammered. We're in a Tornado alert now over in Baldwin County, AL. Grand Bay is catching an ugly band right now in Mobile County. School is out tomorrow due to potential flooding even over here. I'm afraid some hospital generators may break down along with some levees. How can some water pumps be out of commission before the storm strikes? Winds are rapidly increasing.

Especially if regulations and guidelines that require regular testing aren't followed. The oceanfront condo buildings I managed had backup generators to run elevators and emergency corridor lights, the garage door, etc.
We were required to run monthly operational tests. If hospitals don't they're opening themselves to huge penalties and liability. It would be the height of stupidity.

Add saltwater exposure to those oceanfront things, and mechanical lifespans are especially short and uncertain.

We have a beach condo at NSB. The maintenance stuff is never-ending (sliding glass doors, AC, door jams, etc., etc.).

Look how many people cut corners just to save money. Its stupidity and sheer greed for these safety measures not to be taken. Going into Hurricane season there is no excuse on why some water pumps in Nawlins are not working. Just mind bottling.....

Money, money, money. People are paid based on quarterly performance, etc. So many of those folks are motivated to engage in all kinds of chicanery to artificially inflate the financials, etc. But eventually the reaper must be paid….the budget manipulators hope to be gone when that happens.

I heard there are a specific set of conditions that occured which led to rapid intensification overnight and into this morning. The one thing I don't like about YTTV... no Weather Channel.

I think that one is over but those bands are ripe to spawn tornadoes as Ida moves inland. I'm watching a field reporter in Houma, LA. which is dealing with an eye wall atm. It looks really bad.

Building a city below sea level was just a bad idea. There will always be catastrophic possibilities in Nola. Hate it, because I have had some phenomenal times there.
