I entirely concede that I do not have rugrats and for people who do they have less time than I do in a day. But it takes no real time or even skill to make 99% of salad dressings. Want a great fruit vinaigrette? Add some jam, jelly or marmalade to some vinegar and oil and toss in some spices and pulse your immersion blender about three times. That's what two minutes tops? Make your own Caesar with some lemon juice, oil, egg yolk, Worcestershire, and anchovy paste plus whatever spices you want and mix for a minute. Bam, five minutes tops. Make your own Russian dressing by mixing mayo and ketchup with some pickled horseradish, onion powder, paprika, a turn or two of mixed peppercorns, a splash of hot sauce and any other spiced you want. Bam! Two minutes tops. Want to make absolutely amazing ranch that blows away the best ranch you've ever had even in restaurants? It will take 24 hours but maybe two minutes of your prep time. You simply make a creme fraiche by adding two teaspoons of buttermilk to a cartoon of heavy cream and then leave it out on the counter at room temp (covered by a paper towel not touching the liquids). The next day you'll have creme fraiche which is 1000x better than any store bought sour cream. Take that and add a little lemon juice, some garlic powder, onion powder, a turn or two of mixed peppercorns, and some good quality oil of your choosing (I prefer walnut for its butteriness) and then blend. Other than waiting for the buttermilk culture to do its magic it would take maybe five minutes.
