Best Colorado resort town in summer?

As a flatlander who went to Breck this spring, the elevation hit me hard. Not sure if staying in Denver for a day or two before might help but we had to pay a visit to one of the oxygen bars first day there.

It would help some, but Breck is @9500 ft, so it is still a big jump from Denver. Altitude sickness is no joke. Upside, 1 drink will go farther...

We have a placd in Breckenridge. I love to dki but summer is my favorite time of year there. Breck gets my vote :)

How far south into Breck is your place? Silverthorne is starting to feel the proximity of the Buffalo Mtn Fire.

A couple friends and I are looking to stay in one of the Colorado resort towns close to Denver for a few days this summer. Looking for a combination of great outdoorsy stuff as well as some cool bars/restaurants. I know all the names (Aspen, Breckenridge, Vail, Steamboat, etc) but haven’t been to any of them. Ideally something within a few hour drive of Denver. Thanks.

Hey OP, WHEN were you planning on this trip?

So what’s the deal with these fires around Silverhorne? I am going to be in Dillon on Monday.

Hey @funksouljon did you get any damage from that storm last night?

Honestly, I was watching tv and thought it was just a biga$$ raccoon on the roof for the first 20 minutes. Looked outside and saw lots lighting down south, that was the end of it for me! I didn't even know it was that bad to be honest. We are on the north west side of town so get protected by the ridge many times. Looks like there may be more coming later today. Y'all?

You're in the part of town we wanted to be in. But man was it cut throat and ended up way southeast. Near Security-Widefield and Fountain.

The Lightning/thunder woke me up at 1230 and since our neighborhood is in a rain dead zone, I didn't think we'd get much. Boy was I wrong. I know we had golf ball sized hail, but thankfully no real damage. People in Fountain had baseball sized hail.

Yes, we got lucky to buy in the down market. There were 8? homes for sale when we purchased. Now, there are 2 condos and this .41 acre lot for $135k!

It does feel oddly humid today though.

Edit - the fires back in 2013? Burned a fair # of the homes down in the neighboring hood. Ended up allowing them to build more expensive places also driving the values up even higher.

That's funny....I was going to post the same question. It's looking like Houston is going to be particularly close to the sun this summer....with our temperature already in the upper 90's. Therefore, we were thinking that a trip to the mountains in july would be welcomed. The AirBnB for Breck are very reasonable.

I'm in Denver right now before heading to Omaha. It was warm during the day but the evening walk was enjoyable. It drizzled a bit. The first time in many moons. People were happy.

Personally, I would head to Seattle in mid July. Go when the Mariners are playing a late afternoon game. Tons to do in the area. Pick your poison.

Ok we are up in the Colorado mountains, and I love this place in the summer( only have been in winter). We are staying in Dillon, but have been all over Frisco and Breckinridge. We have white water rafted; took a bike ride down the Vail pass( awesome); and have the kids at some summer thing in Breck( now) where we are doing a bunch of stuff like mountain coasters.

We still have a bunch of hiking to do, my favorite thing and might hit one of those hot springs. Might take a trip to Streamboat. Probably won’t do Vail Village this time, but who knows. This is a great trip so far.

A great restaurant up there is the Arapahoe Cafe.

Estes Park is the best place to be in the summer! You can not beat horse back riding in the Rockies! No Sir! You can also go into the Stanley Hotel and check on Jack's spirit from "The Shining." :)Here's Johnnie! Their Redrum Wine (a very deep rich red color) is a killer! Beaver Creek is where all the action is, too! Often went there to do some major beaver and possum hunting. Just be careful of cougars who could be lurking just a few yards away though. Talk about a wild animal with speed!

No kidding. It's so high you'd have a headache and be short of breath half the time you're there. The Molly Brown / silver mine thing is cool, but no other reason to hang out there.

One thing to remember for all of us Florida flat landers - bring one or two long sleeved shirts and maybe a sweatshirt. We were on Pikes Peak summit in late July and it was snowing!
Hope you went to Cripple Creek; a current gold mining town on the way to Pike's Peak. They have several casinos and plays on the mainstreets. Taking the train up there is cool, too. Bear Country! Be on the lookout!

Spent three days in Denver and a week in Vail last June and it was fantastic. Glenwood Springs, a few different hikes including Hanging Lake, Mountain coasters in Breckinridge and lots of good eats. As for the altitude, it didn’t bother me in Denver but felt it significantly when touring Red Rocks. Once we were in Vail and did the mountain hikes, i was fine. Drink tons of water.

On one of the hikes, we came within 10-15 yards from a bear. We were bricks but the locals all went by like it was a house pet as they said, “hey bear, hey bear” over and over. We walked past without incident.

I've been to Cripple Creek! God, who sang that song?
Stopped in on the drive from Colorado Springs to Aspen, pulled the first slot, won $600 and quit!!

Glad to hear it, Daddy! Love it there!

Love Estes Park, have been there several times. Gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park - absolutely gorgeous country.
You sound like a real animal lover...

The place is infested with elk. They were grazing on the lawn of the motel we stayed in.
That was our trip to the FSU-Colorado game.

So is RM National Park. And I know you've been to Yellowstone, right? The elk absolutely have taken over the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel area. So much so that a park ranger is on the village square in front of the hotel full time just to kept the shutter bugging Japanese tourists from walking right up to the elk to snap photos. Those bull elk can get riled up over that.

Today was another great day in Colorado. We took the most beautiful drive from Dillon to Steamboat Springs. We went to the hot springs, which my daughters loved. Beautiful day without a cloud in the sky. No Florida humidity. I wish we could stay much longer.

Stop it! That's not fair dude! :D I was out there last July and loved every minute of it. Good news, however. The Florida humidity just dropped down to 92%.

OP, I would say Breck would be a very good place for your family vacation.

So today is the sad day because we are headed back to hot and humid Florida. Yesterday we drove up to Leadville to do some horseback riding. It was a cool trail and was great because these dudes were the real thing. They were not a bunch of hippies that just got into horses, and this is their life. We thenheaded back and did a great hike to Lily Pad Pond. We finished the night with a good meal at Dillon Dam Brewery. Lot’s of beers they brew there and good food.
