California wildfires.

Watching last night and there were 6 separate uncommunicated fires in the Hollywood Hills area. That looks like they are having help.

I am safe. We had to close our two practice locations and go fully remote. The situation has been rapidly evolving, and we have been attempting to adapt as well as we can. Several of my colleagues and friends have lost their homes, schools, offices, etc.; but we have all managed to evacuate the city until the circumstances stabilize. We are very grateful to all of our firefighters who have come from across the entire state to help and our city, county, and state leaders who are doing as good a job as possible at managing a generational catastrophe. The Palisades and Malibu will rebuild like they have after previous fires, but I really worry about Alta Dena.

Glad you're safe.

What do you think is causing these fires?

The concurrence of a historically dry year, with essentially no rain for the last nine months, with an extraordinarily strong Santa Ana wind event. The humidity has been incredibly low, and the winds have been incredibly strong and persistent. Just the worst case scenario for wildfires, and once one starts the winds carry burning embers all over the area igniting other fires.

Thanks.

How did the first spark begin?

I assume no one lit a match.

Do you live in that area or have practices in that area? I was thinking you were up near the bay area now.

The four-five year rebuild timeline is going to be a nightmare for SoCal.
Finding shelter as a long term rental is going to be very difficult because the reported shortage of homes/condos/apartments was already of concern. Note: Average home price in LA County is now just over $900,000 dollars.
Many of the citizens may just decide to relocate to Nevada or Arizona.
Demographers and sociologists will have a busy time laying out the long term effects this will have on many aspects of American life.
Expect shortages of building supplies, appliances, and home furnishings nationwide.
Time to buy Home Depot Stock?

Moving will be easier than rebuilding in that regulatory environment.

Malibu and the Palisades is where the celebrities live. I saw that Tom Hanks’ and Steven Spielberg’s houses came through unscathed.
Was the surrounding neighborhood affected? We have friends who have a cabin on the mountain overlooking Gatlinburg Tennessee. When they had the massive wildfires there, it jumped their road but burned those above and below. It was very odd.

It keeps jumping over to the next canyon and burning down to the PCH. They just arrested a woman for trying to start a fire in Malibu.

Firebugs are mentally disturbed people who should be incarcerated if for no other reason the safety of their fellow humans.
How horrible for all of us that they either don’t understand what they’ve done or they enjoy what they’ve done to others.

We have quite a few bad characters in this country now too.

The insurance battles will be horrendous. The FAIR last resort insurance offered by the State of CA is not so different from Citizens here in FL and neither one is fully funded.

Wait till they find out their protected property tax will go away if they don't rebuild within 2 years. It will take way longer than that.

The Governor has signed an executive order freezing many of the state, county, and city requirements for permitting so that might shorten that timeline.
I wonder if the expected blowback if that property tax protection does go away might have been part of that equation.

They are doing really good work. As always with these big calamities, I am heartened by the community's coming together and supporting each other with kindness and compassion. I am hearing so many wonderful stories of people taking care of each other and their neighborhoods.

I donated $20. :)

They said they have thousands of people offering to help so I hope they get tons of money.

First I want to say my heart goes out to those affected, including animals etc

I’ve never been through anything like this, including many storms here in south Florida

I saw where they were freezing permits ( I guess that means the time delay ), but I don’t think rebuilding of anything will be for quite some time

This will affect construction countrywide, both driving the cost up even higher than it already is and materials becoming scarce as demand exceeds supply

Right now just food, shelter and basic survival are the immediate needs

As some on here have said it’s gonna be along time down the road

In closing, I can’t fathom the mental and emotional anguish these folks are going through, and I hope that out of the ashes goodness, faith and brotherhood will rise with the new day!
