A plastic piece on my Gevalia coffee maker broke making it unusable. Because of its age, I can't replace the part so I need to buy another one. The current similar model is $189.

I like the thermal pots but only make coffee at the house three times a week and don't want to spend that much. Does the coffee maker really make a difference to the quality of the coffee?

We have bought expensive and they last 2-4 years and we have bought cheap and they last 2-4 years. Unfortunately, my lack of sophistication doesn't taste a difference between the two. I probably can not tell the difference due to the strength of the coffee I make. I have been told my brew should be severed in a Cuban coffee cup.

We have always purchased cuisinart, our current one, besides making coffee, also has a hot water dispenser that my wife likes because she drinks a lot of tea.
I think we got it for around $80 from BBB with 20% off of course.

We have a kuerig for convenience and a bialetti for when we want something stronger or different.

I attribute most of the recent increased cost of coffee makers to a few features:
  1. Does it have an automatic timer?
  2. Does it have variable brew strength settings?
  3. Does it have variable brew size (carafe, single mug, small mug, etc) settings?
  4. Is it easy to clean?
  5. Does it have a built-in filter or does it require paper filters?
  6. Does it brew more than just coffee? i.e. espresso, tea, etc.

That said, I have seen plenty of 12-cup coffee makers that have programmable brew timer and brew strength that go for under $30. Having all the above features doesn't necessarily make the price worth it, but some of these "do it all" coffee makers are crazy expensive and if you just use it for plain jane coffee, they aren't even close to worth it.

I don't have this coffee maker, but seems perfectly fine for a cheapo occasional coffee maker.

when our last coffee maker a Cuisinart Grin and Brew machine with a stainless steel carafe died after 8 yrs we did a search. Went with this one. The wifey seems happy with it.

Yeah, honestly I really love the Cuisinart Grind and Brew we have. Set it up overnight just dropping some water and whole beans in, set the timer and then you wake up to coffee. Is it to the quality of the more time consuming methods? Probably not but it’s 98% of the way there and no muss and no fuss. We also have a Gaggia expresso machine that gets used about twice a year and some cold presses that get used more often but still no more than once for every twenty times we’ve used the Cuisinart. It’s just too easy and quick to use and the quality isn’t really noticeable unless you’re doing it black and no sugar. Only then do I notice a subtle lack of bitterness in the cold press versus the Cuisinart.

TexSkills gave me a Keurig, but it turns out I'm not a fan. Just use a Mr. Coffee instead and I don't have to repeat the whole process if I just want a quick refill.

My wife likes her coffee HOT! Drip are not hot enough for her so we use a percolator. I buy green beans and roast them. Some say percolator is the worst but others like it. Tis all in personal taste. Works for us.

Agreed, we have a similar model only I grind n store 4 days ahead and dump it into the filter each night. I find its more work to clean the coffee's grinder unit daily due to the oils than to spend the pregrinding. I don't notice a flavor difference but the onboard grinder is a nice back up.

We have the same unit and like it a lot. The only downside is cleaning the grinder unit after each use, but I really like having freshly ground coffee each morning.

Haha, I think about that when people grind these huge 3lb bags. We store in an airtight no light container, I haven't noticed a difference in grind at time of brew vs 4 days out. I confess, I haven't ground beans and let them sit for 1.5 months to see if there is a difference, new experiment?

Have you asked the store how often they clean out the grinder?
