Fleeting attempt at a thread that's actually discussing the action in the tournament....

Russia is looking horrible. So much for being hopeful they could take the 1-seed in this group and that we could avoid Belgium in the round of 16

Russia may look like crap, but S.K.....despite their possession dominance the last third of the match or so...has not shown any hint that they can finish and put the ball in the back of the net This has nil-nil written all over it.

.Belgium didn't impress me that much earlier today. If we can get out of the G.o.D., I won't be scared of them.

...And, of course as soon as I say that, Russia's keeper does his best UM place-holder impression.

How was the Russian goal-scorer not offsides? He was behind the 2nd-man, ball was shot/deflected to him, and he scores. They haven't showed the offsides angle, but it looked clear as day

Well, his comrade may have saved him. A really good match has broken out here late.

I'd have to see the replay again.

Algeria just got physical with Belgium but they have improve in ball movement. Belgium is still a good side. They should that group but who knows with the way this tournament has been going.

And now the other thread is officially broken...

I still believe the Russian was offsides (paused it on my DVR at the moment the ball was "played" off his teammate), but without the right camera angle, it's tough to judge.

And 37mins in, Australia is dominating the Dutch everywhere except the scoreline (1-1). Crazy!

Too bad this will be Cahill's final World Cup match of his career.

Cristiano Ronaldo OUT of the World Cup, according to several sources. WOW

RVP levels at 2-2, but he'll miss the final game vs Chile on yellows. That could be huge.
Holland better win today then!

We can't be that lucky. Any update on Jozy?

Sounds like those sources are backing off those reports now. And I don't see Jozy playing another minute in this World Cup.

I would think that if he's done, they would have announced after the MRI so I think it's not as bad.

Adios Spana!

As some of us were discussing yesterday in the "official" thread, this thing is wide open.

We'll see how Germany does, but as of now, they've been by far the most impressive. Then again, the Dutch looked that way after game 1 and almost took it on the chin in game 2 to a much lesser foe.

I'm really surprised at the Swiss. They just can't get in a rhythm.

5-0. This is probably the most legitimate high scoring game that I have ever seen in WC play.

(I don't consider the Peru-Argentina score of 1978 legit)

The Swiss are outclassed in this match.

My question for those that follow EPL. What percentage are actually English? It seems there is a development issue in the UK.

I follow South America more closely, so I honestly don't know.

And finally, we have commentators that do a great job throughout the match. Palomo and Moreno. IMO, that is what it is supposed to sound like.

Unfortunately, most of the commentary is in the dry British style. This is a nice switch from the dry American/British commentary.

Is this a joke?! I don't mind these two, but Derrick Rae, who did the Italy/Costa Rica match is fantastic, as is Adrian Healey. Ian Darke is great too when paired w/Macca. How do you not like those guys?

*Casey Keller and Taylor Twellman are awful as color guys. Awful.

I read that the EPL is only 40% English, and I'm not sure if that includes the other four or five countries that are in England (Wales, Scotland.....).... I love that commercial.

I like it because it's fast and continuous, no pauses. It's like the way the games are called in Spanish and Portuguese, which I find far more entertaining, but that's me. I grew up with Brazilian futebol.

Also, I missed the Italy Costa Rica match. I was stuck in a meeting.

This. I used to like listening to the Hispanic announcers (that's about all I ever heard through the 90's and early 2000's), but now give me Derrick Rae & Ian Darke all the time.

And declining, maybe it's just the end of the golden age. But there's probably sides in the EPL that doesn't have 1 Brit in the starting 11

Love the British announcers. I like how they call the action and you dont get all the drivel you do in American sports talk about stuff that is not sports related.

The EPL is almost becoming the worlds league and that is why you are seeing such a low percentage of English players. Spain is crazy top heavy with Barca and Real dominating the league both in results and financially so it leaves little incentive for the other clubs to spend and go out there and bring in talent. Serie A seems to be in a bad decline. Bundegliga is very passionate and while Bayern are defintly the team to beat I think the other clubs do well, just I dont believe aside from Bayern the other clubs have the resources to spend.

That leaves the EPL with the likes of Man Utd, City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs and even lower table teams spending the huge TV money that the league gets to bring in the best players. A team like Spurs which can compete for CL spots is probably similar to a Valencia or Sevilla but they go out and buy foreign players to try to move up the table quickly.
