Do people actually give cars/automobiles for Christmas?

The ads around this time of year where the spouse/partner etc surprises the other with a new car in the driveway with a big red bow?

Nothing wrong with it, I just wondered if anyone has actually done it? Seen it?

I think my wife would kill me if I purchased a vehicle without us discussing all the pros/cons of such a substantial purchase.

I'm pretty sure it has never happened except in a commercial.

First of all if I spend the money to by my wife a luxury vehicle and get the "I don't like the color" comment the next purchase is a shovel that will not break easily.

Old locker room joke.

20 years of marriage… We don’t spend over $500.00 without discussing it with each other. Of course, we also don’t do Christmas for each other (just the kids). Never would happen in my house.

About 10 years ago around this time, my sister and I surprised our dad with a trip to the Toyota dealership to pick out a new truck. We knew he had been considering a new one, so we put together a sizeable deposit. While we didn't outright buy it, his monthly payment wasn't much more than a couple hundred bucks a month. We negotiated additional accessories to be added and installed so we didn't leave with it, but when he later went back to pick it up, they had a big bow on it for him.

Was at a Toyota dealer earlier this year and they had several large bows like that in the lobby. Like you, my wife would probably kill me.

My wife and I have exactly the same rules. Purchases over $500 must have approval by the other spouse and we don't really buy each other Christmas presents. Every once in a while if I see something perfect I'll get it for her but there are no expectations.

I am too paranoid that I'd get a car purchase wrong if I was buying her something.

~$75k cars parked in front of multi-million dollar houses.

I have laughed at this too. We have all seen the commercial where the dude buys a truck (presumably for himself) and an SUV for his wife. Like who in the hell can afford one new vehicle let alone 2 at the same time. Could you only imagine his insurance payments?

Exactly.
The amount of paper work alone with credit checks etc...hard to keep it a secret.

If you can afford a $100k car or truck, you can afford both of those GMCs.

Yea that GMC commercial is really dumb, those are maybe $60k fully loaded OTD and they are living in a $3+ million dollar house. That said, there's no way people with that much money would be financing a GMC.

Yes, Virginia. Many people get cars this time of the year. Its the best time of the year to buy one. But don't purchase a vehicle without the boss' approval. You may end up missing without a trace.

Off topic a little, but the movies where a man buys him and his wife a new house .... those irk me.

My wife and I just went through the process of selling our home and buying a new one; it's not an easy, secretive thing to do. And buying a HOME of all things ... I'd be furious if my wife was like, "welp, here's your new residence, hope you like it ..."

On topic -- my wife would consider me an idiot if I bought her a new car for any occasion.

They work very hard every Christmas to convince us it's normal to drop $60,000 on a new vehicle as a present.

If my wife were doing that (buying me a new residence) it'd be a trailer somewhere that i'd be living alone in... and I'd be awaiting some paper work...
