I was wondering about Thursday's incident below. If you have any idea, is this something likely to be traceable to an unavoidable technical problem, or is this possibly edging toward pilot error? Could somebody on this plane's crew even be likely out of a job?

I've never landed in a snowy area, so initially I wondered about weather/runway conditions. But whenever I'm landing seems like I always hear something like an air break sound after the plane touches down, slowing the speed, so maybe that alleviates worries over needing friction on the ground to slow down. I just heard a Pax interviewed where he said the plane skidded to the left after touching down, then felt like it ran over a "speed bump".

A passenger jet skidded off a runway at LaGuardia Airport and crashed into a fence as it tried to land amid a blinding wintry mix Thursday morning, sparking a minor fuel leak in one of its wings, prompting evacuations and injuring several people, Port Authority officials say. [/I]

There were 127 passengers, including Giants tight end Larry Donnell, and five crew members on board Delta flight 1086, an MD-88 headed to New York from Atlanta, Georgia, when it slid off the runway around 11 a.m., authorities said. Two dozen people reported minor injuries, according to the FDNY, and three of those people were taken to the hospital. [/I]

Passengers described feeling turbulence as they landed, like a rocking motion. One said the jet hit the runway and didn't slow down until it smashed into the fence, inches from the water.[/I][/I]

Incident at La Guardia

Per news update, the runway had just been plowed before that plane landed. Other planes reported good runway conditions and no trouble landing.

Looks like they landed on Rwy 13. I can't make a judgment with so
little info. Just because the aircraft in front of him reported good
doesn't mean the conditions didn't change. They may have had a big gust
of wind or may have been heavier so were landing at a faster speed.

Could be any of your scenarios. When you are landing in conditions like that, you want a firm landing, then you make sure the speed brakes (on top of the wing) deploy to get weight on the gear, then you use your thrust reversers, then you get on the brakes. Of course you do this pretty much in rapid succession. The wheel brakes aren't very effective above 100 knots. Reversers aren't very effective below around 60-80 knots.

I'll wait for more facts.
