i have been going to this little restaurant for over 30 years

It’s changed ownership many times

The current owner is from El Salvador, in fact all workers there are Latinos from Central America

So I get breakfast sometimes and they always pile on the potatoes

If it’s lunch I like their palammea steak or pollio la plancha

Both dishes come with loads of black beans and rice

My question is this; do people just accept the amount of food they get served as normal and just eat it?

What if they plunked down 4 pieces of toast instead of 2?

Or 3-4 eggs instead of 2?

Would you just arbitrarily clean the plate no matter what amount was served?

I eat until I’m done or run out, I feel no degree of commitment to emptying the plate but if it’s good enough I’ll eat it all.
I’d rather have 4 eggs than 2. I can eat breakfast anytime.

Interesting how you have two very different issues to be addressed here.

One you have a great restaurant that has changed ownership a few times and gives you lots of beans and rice. Which does not cost the restaurant much to pile on.

Two, you are asking about eating everything on your plate no matter what the amount.

Nothing really to add here. I just found it interesting how this issue was framed.

Usually eat everything.
I rarely get a to go box, and when I do I usually forget and leave it in the car and then find it the next day.

I have relatives who will take a to go box of a salad. Wth

Most restaurants give way to much because you have to keep folks happy and normally the things they give you extra are very cheap to prepare like eggs, rice, pasta, etc. They're just hoping you buy more beer or liquor with the bigger meal. Also cheap appetizers.

It depends on where I'm relative to my caloric and macro goals for the day.

Which ends up getting mimicked at home. The best way for me to lose weight is portion control but it's not always as easy as it sounds.

Do this and you will lose weight. Many people think they can just eat certain foods only or work out more you will lose weight. Even if you are on a paleo diet eating 3 steaks for dinner isn't good for you.
Another key is eating small snacks throughout the day; instead of waiting till you are starving and eating a monster meal.

I figure our ancestors didn't worry about portion sizes and just ate what they wanted when food was available. Instead of worrying about portions for each meal I just look at the day as a whole. Big breakfast = lighter lunch and dinner, etc.

I've never seen any deprivation-based diet work long term.

An interesting rule of thumb is to eat like a King for breakfast, a Prince at lunch, and a pauper at dinner if weight loss or maintenance is a goal.

I rarely clean my plate, much more likely to take some home when eating out at a restaurant. I don't really have a huge appetite so don't go loco for huge portion sizes or all you can eat places/deals.

What is this ensure you speak of? Is it a blue pill of some sort? I can understand why you might be familiar with those.

Oh no, but don’t worry. Confusion in the morning is typical for many seniors. The fog will lift for a few hours as the day goes on. :)

I eat until I’m full, not until I’m stuffed or the plate is clean.

If the food was decent I take the rest home.

Usually I just split plates with someone else.

Not sure the point of mentioning the place has had different owners over the years or where its employees were born. Neither have anything to do with portion size.

The answer is most Americans are overweight and restaurants serve way too much because people eat too much. Like someone else said...people who stop when they’re full tend not to be obese.

Sorry, the potatoes have been a mainstay of the place no matter the owner.

The new owners continue the potato chain passed on from the previous owners, and they All have given the very large proportions!

The potatoes I can moderate it’s the black beans/rice that it’s hard to walk away from

I took it as meaning that regardless of the owner or their national origin the practice of giving huge portions doesn't change.

The book “Mindless Eating” by Brian Wansink will answer just about any food portion question you ever had. It will probably change your life

What about the people who just crave to eat things virtually all of the time? I do most of my eating at night anyway.

Just don't eat potatoes. They have zero nutritional value...

I typically eat one very large meal per day, and it’s usually after 11PM. I have not eaten breakfast regularly since elementary school, because it makes me feel terrible. There are a lot of good resources online for intuitive eating and mindful eating, both of which have solid research support.

I historically am a member of the clean plate club. Favorable metabolism meant I had no issues however, late 30s hit and the inevitable slowing of my metabolism meant moderation. These days in at pretty much every restaurant the wifey and I split an entree and dessert 4 ways with the kids.

A little budget/portion control trick we've employed is to keep a sleeve of cups and spoons in the vehicle. We can buy the largest DQ blizzard or Sonic blast and split 4 ways without breaking the bank or consuming way more calories than we should
