FSU softball won its Women's College World Series opener for the first time in five trips under Lonni Alameda last night. While Alameda joked and downplayed the importance of that, it gives the Seminoles an unfamiliar upper hand in the winner's bracket and moves them one win away from a major advantage in the WCWS Semifinals.

It is definitely breaking in FSUs favor:
  • The scheduled late game for Thursday was moved to Friday (FSU plays the winner).
  • FSU gets a full days rest between games (The winner of the Washington/Utah will not)
  • FSU can lean on Katherine Sandercock in game 2 (Either as a starter or in relief)
  • Weather delays are likely, FSU was fortunate to get their game in on Thursday
  • #2 UCLA was knocked out in regionals, #15 Utah advanced

And No. 15 Utah currently leads No. 7 Washington 1-0 in the second inning. Would be another break in FSU's favor.

It did not hold up, Washington won 4-1. FSU plays Washington Saturday.
Utah plays Oklahoma State today (Loser eliminated)

But your original point is still valid. This was supposed to be FSU vs. UCLA if chalk had held. FSU has Sydney Sherrill and Grand Canyon to thank in part for that.
