I bought a fancy new Netgear router, but can't get it to work. It wired it from the modem to the router, then the router to my desktop (ethernet). I get a amber blinking light on the ethernet port that goes to the computer. I worked on it for hours but it won't go away. I cannot set the router up cause it says the desktop is not on the wireless network. Any ideas?

Press the windows key and type CMD then press enter
In the DOS window type IPCONFIG then press enter

Does it show any live connections?

If not make sure the cable going between the PC and router is plugged into a LAN port not the WAN port for the modem. Did the router come with a cable? Need to make sure you are not using a crossover cable between the PC and router.

Thanks. I will try that tonight. It came with a yellow cable, and the router has a yellow input for the cable, but I don't remember what the input is labeled. I am using the yellow cable from the modem to the router, and a blue cable from the router to the computer.

Don't use wireless on your laptop. Plug a network cable directly in to the router. In the instructions, look for the default IP address. Might be something like 192.168.1.1. Open a browser and type that address in the line where you enter web address. It should connect and show a router logon screen. From there follow the instructions.

I will try it. I have the yellow cable from the modem to the router, and a blue cable from the router directly to the desktop.

That's backwards; yellow should go from the desktop to the router and blue from the router to the modem. Switch those and it should fix your problem.

Do your instructions say what each color cable is? Does it say one is a crossover cable? Do not crossover between router and computer. If one of the cables is a crossover, try a regular patch if does not work.

I had one weird experience connecting a router to a modem. They both used the 192.168.1.x subnet and would not work. Routers by nature want to route. I had to change the subnet on the router to 192.168.2.x and it worked fine.

I will check the cables to see what works and if the instructions say if it's a crossover Thanks

I went through this two weeks ago. My Netgear fried out. I went with the gaming-level ASUS.

Tried it all and can't get it to work. Taking it back. May just be defective.
