Haven't seen much news in about the latest from Texas now that they are starting to get access back etc, Florida has taken over the limelight.

Texas got a jump on funds donations and requests, has a more concentrated harder hit population, yet Fl seems like it might be more spread out across the state (plus PR and US VI). Limited Federal funds, people's willingness to donate, etc, etc.

How long before it becomes and bunch of "they got X, we need Y". "They live below sea level" "well they live in a swamp" "well they shouldn't get money, it already floods their city".

Id agree he seemed to do a much better vocal job up to and during. HEB seemed to actually fill in a large role in providing support for the people of Houston just after.

Im thinking more of in then next couple of weeks etc. Now that images or the Keys are starting to appear, holy cow.... There is going to be a lot of needy in the coming months.

Our company was constant in sending out emails and automated voice messages regarding Irma's approach and the potential ramifications of a Cat 4/5 hurricane hitting Florida. My employee in Houston (who was not affected at all by Harvey) immediately asks "why wasn't this happening when Harvey was on his way to Houston?"

Sitting in North Texas with a fairly imminent move to Florida, I had to bite my tongue on that selfish approach. The worst thing that would have happened to Houston was the flooding, which happened. Tragic, yes, but not unexpected given that it IS known as the "Bayou City." With Florida being a peninsula, we've seen what Irma was capable of and it will be a long rebuild for some. I think Scott did great with the mandatory evacs, but how many Floridians would have evacuated on their own anyway? Counter to that, how many Houstonians (and surrounding) thought "Hey, my house is about to be an aquarium, I should leave?" Abbott shouldn't have had to tell people to leave for people to have common sense.

Irma gave a ton of warning and followed her predicted path nearly perfectly and didn't overstay her welcome. Scott had a much easier job. He didn't do anything particularly special.

FL should accept the Canadian aid that TX turned down.

Also, I heard this weekend from some first responder folks (firefighers, etc) that they get treated like crap when they go out to Texas to help because they're from CA. Perhaps FL could give them a warm welcome and snatch them away from TX!

The governor said to "send prayers instead". No lie.
Also, the aid that Mexico offered was never accepted and has now been sent to the areas hit by their earthquake. In fact, it was never even acknowledged.
Smh at the hubris of these people.

Also noticed the US never volunteered any support for Mexico after the earthquake, which deviates significantly from history and isn't very neighborly. :/

Does that mean no Ted Cruz thread this am? :Face with Tears of Joy

Sorry.

Returning to the theme, I think Scott did a great job. The storms were really different beasts in terms of warning time and number of metro areas impacted and Florida officials made great use of that time.

Wow. Glad you had to bite your tongue. You are clueless.

Are you implying that Houston flooding after getting a bunch of rain was a surprise?

Are you relatively new to Texas?

The Weather Channel even had an article calling Houston the flooding capital of the US.

"If you're unlucky, you may have dealt with major flooding perhaps once or twice in your life. But Houstonians, even transplants who have only spent a few years in southeast Texas, likely have experienced flooding multiple times — sometimes in the same year."

"According to NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information, there were 96 days with at least one report of flooding or flash flooding in Harris County from 1996 through 2015. This equates to an average of four to five days of flooding each year over that time period."

"There have been at least 26 events that flooded homes in the Houston metro area since the mid-1970s, according to Houston-based Weather Research Center (WRC) and National Weather Service records. WRC documented area floods, some related to tropical cyclones, back to 1837, the year after the city was founded."

Country western stars are having a benefit concert for Houston. When is ours? I am feeling cheated here.....everyone gets a ribbon -- the same ribbon -- right????

Haha, dedication and focus. Lacking in many today.
Odd for a guy who either lives in Utah or went to the Univ of Tennessee. Guess he could be one of those Russian cyber trolls

How's the weather in Novogrod mate?

I don't think you'll like it as much since the Florida stars would be the surviving members of 2 Live Crew, Flo-rida, and T-Pain.

This isn't accurate. The provincial minister in Quebec called the Texas SOS. The SOS thanked him, but said his office didn't coordinate relief aid. He should contact the locals or another department. But he would appreciate send prayers. This place is like the old game of six degrees of separation--when the story finally gets posted here it's no where near the truth.....sigh, the interwebz.

That is certainly the spin that the SOS went with after the story broke. The initial CBC interview with the minister quoted her as saying "that Pablos declined the aid for now, instead asking for "prayers from the people of Quebec.""

Are you talking about once it made landfall in the keys it followed its predicted path? Because prior to that the forecast was all over the place. People didn't know if they should evacuate or not for much of the state. First it was going to brush the east coast and stay in the Atlantic, then hit Miami and head north, then hit the keys and go through the middle of the state, then go along the west coast and then its eventually path. It did give plenty of warning, but the shifting paths made it difficult to call which places needed to have mandatory evacuations or not.

What authority does a Secretary of State have to turn down aid. Salon.com and that other website is running with this story without thinking critical. Why would Canada ask permission to provide aid. Just send it. Second, every first responder from out of state that has been interviewed and I have met having nothing. It nice things to say about their treatment. Most of the restaurants here have been feeding them for free. Really just a bunch of nonsense being posted here

You are right about the confusion on whether or not to evacuate. My sister in West Palm went to her son's house in Tampa then they all returned to WPB on Saturday ahead of the storm.

The quote was not from Salon, it was from CBCNews Canada.
The stories from the CA first responders were first hand accounts. They didn't say the people of TX treated them poorly, but that the other professionals did. Told them they weren't needed or gave them busy work. Said it only happened to them in TX.
Sorry if that bothers you.
